Although anime is filled with beautiful, thin people, every once in a while, there are some series that offer a break from the norm.
Find out what happens when anime adds a fat character.
As people come in many shapes and sizes, so do anime characters.
Today, I want to focus on those that are inclined towards the shape of a circle.
In all seriousness, I think it’s great to have some larger characters in the mix.
These fat anime characters are worthy of representation.
These characters are often funny, joyful, engaging, and have a lot to offer.
There has been an increase in the number of different shapes and sizes added to a cast, creating a more humanistic and relatable experience for viewers.
Despite all the boom boom pow and bass, some girls on this list are memorable for their unique personalities.
Where are all the Chubby Anime Characters?
Name an anime main character who is overweight. Most likely not, as there are few of them.
The majority of “fat” characters in anime are stereotypes. They can be food lovers, nerds, or jokers.
This is just when the character is overweight.
Some characters, such as Kanako Mimura of Cinderella Girls or Koyomi Mikuhara from Azumanga Daioh, are not visibly larger than the rest, but their slight extra weight causes them to obsess about losing weight.
Because of the Asian culture’s perception of fat, this negativity is common.
Japan’s obesity rate is less than 5%, while Japan’s overweight rate is less than 25% (compared to America’s 32% & 66%, respectively).
It’s not bad to be overweight in Japan. This is just an unusual situation.
It makes sense then that culture with so few overweight people would also have very few overweight characters.
Anime tends to fall back upon stereotyping when they do make an appearance.
Stereotypes in Anime About Being Overweight
Stereotypically, a male anime character is overweight and loves food.
He is also a nerd (sometimes both otaku and computers) and is often an outcast from society.
This is true even if the male character is young.
In anime, thicker adult males are often considered serious officials (policemen or politicians).
Stereotypically, a female anime character is overweight and loves food. Her personality changes with weight.
Visibly obese girls tend to be greedy and mean, while chubby girls can be sweet and kind.
A fat adult woman is either trying to fit into the pants of a young boy in high school or someone’s mother.
These statements are stereotypical – not all anime depict overweight characters in the same way.
Although it’s not common, many examples show how extra weight does not have to be a part of a character’s personality.
31. Hanako Ohtani From Persona 4 The Animation
Hanako is the perfect example of the stereotypical fat anime girl.
Hanako is comically obese and can eat anything that’s in her way.
Despite her size, she is arrogant and vain.
The story does, however, take viewers on a journey and presents a variety of situations in which girls and boys find themselves in difficult situations.
This adds some humour to the story.
Hanako Ootani, who plays the supporting role of Hanako Ootani, is known as a gal with a deep passion for food.
She’s also a woman who can get a man and turn him down in a flash.
Hanako’s personality and size convey the message that “if you have it, flaunt.”
30. Majin Buu From Dragon Ball Z
He might seem more powerful when he’s all slim and ripped.
He is also a bit of a jerk. Good Buu was close friends with Hercule.
It is also possible for him to turn you into chocolate, or another confectionary, and eat you.
That’s pretty scary.
Kid Buu can also destroy other planets and pursue you in the afterlife to permanently eliminate your existence.
My boy Good Buu wanted to fight him to protect Hercule.
A wise meme lord said, “He protects, He attacks, He turns you into an acc.”
29. Natsumi “L” Asaoka From The Kabocha Wine (The Pumpkin Wine)
Aoba Shunsuke was surrounded by many women and girls for most of his adult life.
He is actually fed up.
Shunsuke decides that he needs a change in the way he lives.
He transfers to Sunshine Academy, an all-male school.
Sunshine Academy recently made the transition to co-ed attendance, much to his dismay.
Shunsuke meets Natsumi Asaoka when he arrives at the academy.
She is a tall female student, but he is surprised by her kindness.
Surprisingly, they quickly get along. Shunsuke is bold and brash.
His life at the new school will be an unforgettable one.
Natsumi’s cup size is why she is called “L”. Natsumi is also a lot bigger than Shunsuke.
They make a great couple, Shunsuke & Natsumi.
Shunsuke is not afraid of women.
He has worked at his family’s lingerie shop for many years.
Natsumi eventually helps Shunsuke to get over his awkwardness.
The adorable couple also proves that there’s no limit to the word “beautiful couples”.
28. Minamo Aoi From RD Sennou Chousashitsu (Real Drive)
On the opposite side of Ohtani is Real Drive.
The characters in the anime are not particularly large, but they are more realistically proportioned to anime than in other anime.
The anime received a negative reception from the public, with many criticizing its “large” characters and unappealing designs.
Minamo Aoi seemed to be the most affected by the reactions of others.
27. Akira Takaoka From Assassination Classroom
You might be confused if you have just watched the series.
However, I believe that it is equally difficult to write a great antagonist as a loving protagonist.
This is why you’ll see some baddies on this list. But oh boy.
Takaoka is the anime character I fear most.
This man is the second coming to Satan.
He is not very powerful, as we can see him being beaten quite often. But he is a cruel man.
The picture of his old squad, which shows his true colours, sent chills down my spine.
I hate him so bad that I have to give props to the writers.
26. Yukino Ito From RD Sennou Chousashitsu
The year 2061 AD. The Network society was created to allow people to connect at a deeper level.
There are always complications with new developments.
There are many problems with the new infrastructure, including personal data leaks and information fabrication.
These problems are now known, but the majority of the population prefers to live with them rather than abandon the Network society.
As a solution, “the Metal”, a new network was created that provides better protection.
Metal is now a greater threat than ever, affecting every aspect of our lives and rendering us powerless to distinguish reality from Metal.
See how cyber-divers expertly investigate this dangerous situation.
Minamo Aoi is close friends with Yukino Ito, her classmate. Minamo started as an intern at EISF and then became a full-time employee.
Her friendship with Yukino, Sayama, and Yukino is what keeps her grounded.
The trio can be seen enjoying a variety of activities and eating out at many restaurants throughout the series.
Yukino’s distinctive appearance is not like Minamo or Sayama and does not cause her to be stressed.
They enjoy spending quality time together and are less concerned about keeping their appearances.
25. Milluki Zoldyck From Hunter x Hunter
Milluki is the stereotypical fat male anime character.
He is both an otaku (two-in-one!) and a skilled inventor.
He is a selfish, short-tempered individual who never leaves his home.
He could be Ohtani’s twin brother.
24. Charmy Pappitson From Black Clover
This is a controversial choice because her weight changes and fluctuates more frequently than the Monogatari timeline.
However, my stance on this matter is that if someone can eat ten times their own weight in food, they belong here.
Charmy deserves my praise.
Charmy is such a charming little goof that I love every scene with her.
Charmy is amazing.
She can be anything from wanting to eat the spirits and wind to be the most powerful woman in the show.
Charmy does sometimes get bogged down in the “food is all” stereotype, but it isn’t overbearing.
23. Mirei “Yaji” Yajimma From Genshiken Nidaime (Genshiken Second Season)
Genshiken (the Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture) is a group that combines all aspects of otaku culture.
You can pick your favorite each member has an interest in a specific aspect of otaku culture, reminding us of all the joys and obsessions that go along with our geeky community.
The second season begins on a fresh, positive note as Genshiken’s returning members try to recruit new members.
The club gains four new members as the semester begins.
Veteran members are concerned about the club’s new direction.
Is the club now known as the “rotten girls club”, or will they continue to share their love for otaku culture?
Mirei “Yajima” Yajimma was one of the recruits who was drawn in by Ogiue’s BL posters.
She is a fujoshi, and she is identical to the rest of the group.
She is a stocky, overweight woman who dresses in gender-neutral clothes.
Yaji became more self-conscious about her appearance after Kenjirou Hato arrived.
Yaji is a good example of someone who shows insecurity when confronted with a confident person.
22. Haruyuki Arita From Accel World
Haruyuki, one of the main characters of the anime universe, is overweight.
But when given the option, he transforms into Silver Crow, an android-looking avatar.
Haruyuki may be the main character in the anime, but his weight makes him a bullied social outcast who still plays video games.
His other avatar in-game is very similar to how his peers and many fans see him: as a little pink pig.
21. Shigekiyo Yangu Form Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable
Shigeki is a strange pick. Because he doesn’t fit into any of the categories I mentioned, Shigeki isn’t really a fan favourite nor is he the bad guy.
Shigeki is a mixture of laughter and annoyance.
Because of his ability to see the money in play, I would say that he is a mix of annoyance and laughter.
You’ll recall the 5 million yen fiasco.
Then there is his fight with Kira. This I did not expect. This isn’t Polpo suicide, but it’s damn.
20. Nikuko From Oshiete! Galko-chan (Please tell me! Galko-chan)
Galko-chan shows what happens every day at school for Galko, Otako, and Ojou.
The girls also attempt to dispel myths about female anatomy.
Galko-chan describes herself as “a bit sharp-tongued but a kind-natured, popular girl within the class.”
We explore the minds and experiences of school-aged youths as they go through various psychological and physical changes.
Galko-chan’s classmate and a member of the girls’ futsal club, Nikuko.
Although many may think that being overweight is a sign of being unhealthy, Nikuko shows this to be false.
Because she is so fast, Nikuko has been nicknamed “Sonic Meat” among the boys.
Nikuko’s active lifestyle shows that being overweight doesn’t mean you are lazy or unfit.
19. Kouta Hirano From High School of the Dead
Kouta looks like a typical anime character.
Kouta is a gun otaku who loves women (but not girls), and he’s bullied at school because of his size.
What sets Kouta apart from other anime characters is that he’s based on a real person with the same name: the famous manga-ka and creator of Hellsing.
This gives Kouta a more realistic appearance and makes him more relatable and unusual among large anime characters.
18. Pig God From One Punch Man
Pig God is perhaps the most straightforward of all the obese characters in anime or any other media.
In a single day, a man can eat enough food for 100 people.
Even your favourite shonen characters, such as Luffy or Goku, don’t eat that much.
He almost looks like a giant joke.
Then you realize that he is an S-class hero and extremely powerful.
He can eat monsters alive, and can even walk through buildings if he doesn’t want to.
It’s hard to tell if this guy is a joke or the next step in human evolution.
17. Tamako Inada From Gin no Saji (Silver Spoon)
Hachiken entered Ozeno Agricultural High School, Hokkaido (also known as Ezono) without a goal or a dream.
He was greeted with sweat, tears, and youth.
Silver Spoon tells Hachiken’s story, learning to appreciate farming routines and daily life and sharing these skills with new, more experienced friends.
Tamako Inada is Hachiken’s classmate.
Tamako Inada is a businessman who has stated that one day she will take over her wealthy family’s farm, Giga.
She hopes to make it a better place.
Tamako is a 100 per cent honest person, which can sometimes prove to be both good and evil.
Tamako is also a slimmer woman underneath all her excess weight.
This happens when Tamako works too hard or follows a diet.
She often says that she prefers her larger figure.
16. Witch of the Waste From Howl no Ugoku Shiro (Howl’s Moving Castle)
The Witch of Waste is more than a mean-spirited witch.
She’s also the embodiment of evil.
The Witch is obsessed with her appearance, so she uses magic to make it look young and beautiful when she is actually a very large woman.
She is not fat, even though she is the main antagonist in the movie.
It’s more because she wants to be beautiful as society expects.
15. Tonpa From Hunter x Hunter
Tonpa is a total douche. I love Tonpa.
How dedicated do you have to be to pass the Hunter exam 34 more times simply because you like trolling people?
Sometimes it’s more than just trolling, but it’s not a bad thing.
“The Rookie Crusher” really does try to live up to his title.
The man is a master manipulator, knowing exactly how to get Leorio’s attention and blow his fuse.
Leorio is a shaky fellow.
Tonpa’s writing style is so vile that it is almost impossible to hate him.
He’s also far more than Milluki, who would have been another contender for this list.
14. Charlotte “Big Mom” Linlin From One Piece
Gol D.Roger was the most famous “Pirate King” who sailed the Grand Line to find One Piece in an age where pirates are a major influence on land and water.
His last words, which were spoken by Gol D.
Upon his capture and death at the hands of the World Government, Roger set a challenge for the next generation.
Monkey D. Luffy is one of the challengers.
He was not the typical pirate personality and quickly earned the highest bounty.
Luffy and his Straw Hats crew dream of sailing the Grand Line to seek fame, riches, and glory.
They embark on an amazing journey with many twists and turns thanks to their adventurous spirit.
The Captain of the Big Mom Pirates is Charlotte Linlin.
She not only has a formidable crew behind her, but she is also the queen of Totto Land, her country.
Big Mom is a well-respected member of a distinguished family.
She is a tall, muscular woman who has a huge personality.
Big Mom can be a wild animal who will rage at you if she doesn’t have your favorite food in her hand.
13. King Kai From Dragon Ball Z
I wish King Kai would greet me in his munchkin world when I die.
He is the epitome of dad jokes.
He will only train you if you make him laugh.
When it comes to mentoring, he also borrows from the Karate Kid.
Your first task will be to catch Bubbles and hit his butler cricket using a hammer.
Dragon Ball Z is the most loved big oaf of all.
The best of the best, Mr Popo, Yajirobe the Ox-king
12. Porco Rosso From Kurenai no Buta (Porco Rosso)
Porco Rosso is fat simply because he is a pig.
Although he wasn’t always porcine, his new look seems to be more in line with his human body.
Porco, a pig-man, finds it easier to relate to people and understand them better.
This doesn’t stop him from searching for love.
Porco may be an anime character, but his portliness is second to his piggy face.
11. Yoshinobu Kubota From Sakamoto desu ga? (Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto)
Just like any other character, Kubota pales in comparison with Sakamoto.
This is to be expected. He does, however, have an interesting character arc.
Kubota is bullied and turns to Sakamoto for support.
He thinks Sakamoto will give him the usual sidekick experience, while Sakamoto will simply beat the bullies.
They end up working together at a fast-food joint so Kubota can learn about the value of money and his own worth.
Kubota is an interesting character, and I like the unique twist to the anime formula.
10. Takeo Gouda From Ore Monogatari!! (My Love Story!!)
Takeo isn’t really fat.
He’s just large-boned and strong.
His large stature, whether he is fat or muscular, still makes him seem intimidating.
Takeo, despite his size, is a gentle giant.
He is kind, selfless, and fortunate for him, he finds a girl who sees him as he truly is.
9. Reiji Andou From Prison School
You are a better person than me if you can look at Andou without running away or laughing.
The absolute behemoth is known for its bizarre design choices.
His face is comically small and his ears are too long.
He is also a massive masochist and doesn’t mind being punished.
Meiko holds the whip.
Later, this whip will be used to manipulate Andou the walking mountain.
Jonathan Joestar is his voice actor, so you can take that as it is.
8. Josuke Udono From Basilisk: Kouga Nipou Chou (Basilisk: The Kouga Ninja Scrolls)
Josuke, like Takeo, is a gentle giant misunderstood because of his large stature.
He is friendly, but his large stature scares away women.
Josuke is similar to Takeo in that he uses his size for combat but has the added ability to contract and expand like rubber.
He can bounce off weapons, but rejects are more difficult to dodge.
7. Ozeki Shinya From Hinomaru Sumo
Hinomaru Sumo finally accepts overweight characters as a norm, and not just for comic effect.
Ozeki Shinya is my favourite character.
He is the captain of the sumo team.
There are a few reasons I like him.
First, many of the main characters seem out of place. He is also the most down-to-earth.
He is a sumo fanatic.
Although he isn’t the strongest, he has endurance and knows how to use it to his benefit.
You can use your head to get power-ups and plot armour.
6. Chouza Akimichi and Choji Akimichi From Naruto
Chouji and Chouza love to eat, but they don’t really follow the stereotype.
Both are skilled fighters and Chouji has been ridiculed for his size.
However, father and son have adapted their size into a powerful fighting style.
Their size makes them formidable opponents on the battlefield.
5. Ichiya Vandalay Kotobuki From Fairy Tail
Ichiya is the only and most feared ace of the Blue Pegasus guild, and the leader of Tremens.
This short, stout womanizer I know is a joke character.
But man, do I love him. He is a “parfum” warrior who never fails to entertain.
His eccentric demeanour and bedazzling appearance make him look like Yuga’s divorced father.
He was Erza’s honey, so we must not be unaware of his qualities.
4. Kosaku Tokita From Paprika
Kosaku appears and acts like a grown-up child.
But behind his innocent and gentle exterior is a brilliant brain.
He is the inventor of the new technology that allows people to jump into the dreams of others, even though he may not fully understand the implications.
Kosaku is technically a fat anime character.
He’s a great computer user and loves to eat.
This large man isn’t typical and even gets the love and attention of a beautiful lady.
3. Marshall D. Teach From One Piece
Blackbeard is the only and true Blackbeard.
Blackbeard, a tall pirate who is an absolute powerhouse within the One Piece universe, has broken teeth and a shroud covering his face.
Like Luff, he is a strong believer in fate. He is the only one who can possess two devil fruits at this time.
His character is prone to change depending on the circumstances.
He can show both brilliance and stupidity, as well as unwavering courage and cowardice.
He is sure to be a formidable boss with his ever-increasing bounty and crew.
2. Itaru Hashida From Steins’ Gate
Hashida appears to be a typical anime fat character.
Hashida is a computer programmer skilled in programming, a digital otaku, and a bit perverted.
Because he isn’t any of these things, Hashida is one of the most accurate portrayals of an obese anime character.
He is a normal guy who enjoys anime girls and computers, but he is also chunky.
1. Fat Gum From Boku no Hero Academia
Literally, the man has “fat” in his title.
It could not be more perfect.
Fat Gum is the ultimate cop in his sense of justice as well as his leadership.
Fat Gum, Red Riot, and Sun Eater all scream “good times”.
His quirk might seem at first a little weak.
Rappa will tell you the opposite, but oh boy!
This is a great twist that makes him the ultimate shield and sword.
Let’s just say that the ultimate sword would be a big hit with many people.
