Anime has some of the most creative world-building we see in all of literature ever. I have seen anime from almost all genres like shounen, romance, ecchi, slice of life and the world-building or the premise in tall these anime are mind-numbingly creative.
Influenced by these stories and the culture, Mangakas have build their own universe with such monsters in them and have written amazing stories about such worlds.
In this listicle we are about to find out the best anime about demons or with demons in the universe from all the anime genres out there!
21 Best Anime About Demons
Let us start exploring the world of demons that we have got for you!
21. Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpucho
What is the best combination of a city and types of monsters? *DRUMROLL*
Hiyuu Tatsuma and his friends decide to protect Tokyo from the evil that lurks in the shadows of the city. Tokyo is infested with Oni (demons) due to the same event that gave these teenagers powers.
The anime has a suspense-filled plot along with some well-written characters. It is definitely worth your time.
20. Devil Survivor 2 The Animation
The plot of this 2013 Anime, Devil Survivor 2 revolves around Kuze Hibiki, a third-year high school teenager and his friends.
Kuze goes through a series of events and somehow gets himself involved in a war between humans and the outlanders called, Septentriones. These outlandish creatures cause havoc all over Japan and so for fighting these creature humans end up making a deal with the demons.
These humans are called “Demon Summoners”. I found this concept pretty cool that humans are using demons to do their bidding in the war.
The animation quality is well above average with a well-written and creative world along with some badass characters and their developments. The only aspect where the anime fails would be its plotline and originality.
19. Shinmai Maou no Testament
If you like ecchi humor with a tinge of shounen then this anime would be just for you. Shinmai Maou no Testament(The Testament of Sister New Devil) is about demons, romance and has a fair amount of good action scenes.
The story follows our laid-back protagonist, Basara, an ex-member of the Hero Clan. His normal life gets turned upside down when one day his father brings home two beautiful ladies who turn out to be Basara’s step-sisters.
Basara is laid-back but when it comes to protecting his family, especially the Naruse sisters, he would do alot, after all, he has vowed to protect them.
18. Highschool DxD
Personally, I think Highschool DxD is about many things, if you know what I mean, to be classified under a anime with demons.
But technically it does have demons so here we are. Highschool DxD has the counter part of devils too that is angels and fallen angels.
The anime has a wide variety of characters, some cute, some sexy and everything. Usually I don’t care for English Dubs but Highschool DxD English Dub has won awards for voice acting, so it has to be quite good.
17. Twin Star Exorcists
Sousei no Onmyouji(Twin Star Exorcists) is an amazing story about two talented exorcists who are prophesized to become one.
The story follows our main characters Benio, a talented exorcist recognized by the Exorcist Union and all other exorcists to be one of the strongest exorcists out there, and Rokuro, a new but talented young exorcist.
The Twin Star Exorcists anime world has a creative and unique concept of a world called Magano, which is supposedly filled with monsters called the “Kegare”. The Exorcists travel to this world to rid the world of all its impurities.
The anime has a simple plot which serves well right until the ending episodes of the show, the art and characters are about average.
16. Blood Lad
Blood Lad is an anime about vampires, humans and demons, and all this happens down in the demon world.
The protagonist of the titular series, Staz Charlie Blood, at first seems to be a killing machine, a monster who looks over the Eastern District of the demon world, but he is just an otaku obsessed with Japan and its culture like all of us.
If that isn’t a relatable main character then I don’t know what is.
The plot revolves around Staz and Fuyumi, a girl that accidentally travels to the demon world and meets Staz.
The anime is an emotional rollercoaster, we see romance, grief, death and love, it is definitely worth the watch.
15. Kyoukai no Kanata
Are you looking for a 12 episode wonderfully written slice of life with a supernatural aspect? Come to the right place with this anime.
I liked this anime for its world-building. It has a simple approach which we have seen a lot in anime but it is executed wonderfully in this anime. I am referring to “youmu”, creatures that are physical incarnates of negative emotions of humans.
The anime has an amazing premise but it fails to dive deep into its own world, develop its characters and create an engaging and intricate storyline for the viewers. Despite its shortcomings, it is still an amazing anime, with a good animation style and a well-written premise.
14. Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu
The protagonist, Lute Ryner is a powerful mage, once a student of an elite magic school, now a mage for his king, the King of Roland. Ryner is special because of his eyes, he has the “Alpha Stigma” eyes which are supposedly a set of cursed eyes.
Ryner, sets out on a mission or a journey to find the secret behind his cursed eyes and bring peace and prosperity for his kingdom by finding the Legendary Relics left by the heroes of the past.
The animation quality and the suspense is the most enjoyable aspect of the anime. The anime sometimes fails to catch the attention of its viewers, it seems bland and kind of boring at the beginning but it gets better with each episode.
13. Nurarihyon no Mago
Nurarihyon no Mago is about a shounen boy who is part human and part youkai. Rikuo is a young master of the Nura Clan, he treats his clan very dearly, almost like a family.
Nurarihyon is about a boy who is on a journey to discover himself, rather it is about how Rikuo is forced to explore all of himself because of all the situations he faces.
At first, we see how Rukio is running from himself but his character is developed a lot as we go through the story. The anime also has great antagonists and a well-written premise.
The anime has an amazing watching experience, it makes you think and analyze the experience. Personally, Ioved to put me in Rukio’s shoes and think about how I’d react.
12. Owari no Seraph
Owari no Serpah (Seraph of the End) couldn’t have been more accurately titled, the anime is about vampires and demons in a post-apocalyptic world.
Owari no Seraph is about avenging and it is about retribution. The protagonist seeks vengeance against the creatures that tormented, exploited and finally killed off his family and loved ones.
The story is very intricate and a wide set of characters, the anime is very immersive. It grasps the attention of the viewers and pulls them closer and makes them dive into the experience.
Even though it has a creative premise it lacks the art of storytelling or rather fails to distinguish itself from the other anime, thus making it very generic. Despite its shortcomings, the anime as I said has a great watching experience because of its immersive style.
This anime has one of the most creative premises you will read about on this list. The anime takes place inside a game called, Yggdrasil which was supposed to shut down but somehow it doesn’t shut down!
Momonga, the protagonist of Overlord is also the leader of a dark guild called, Ainz Ooal Gown, when he finds out about the incident about the servers, he commands all his followers to take control of the new world thus becoming the “Overlord”
While the premise is certainly similar to another famous anime about MMORPG game, Sword Art Online but in my opinion the execution of the storyline in Overlord is way better and interesting.
There is probably not much Overlord fails at, it is a very enjoyable anime with a great set of characters and an interesting storyline
10. Ao no Exorcist
Ao no Exorcist has one of the most diligently creative plots and a varied set of characters among other shounen anime. The anime is based on the very basic concept of two worlds, Human World called the Assiah and The Demon World, Gehenna
The protagonist of the anime, Okumura Rin actually turns out to be the son of Satan, King of Gehenna. After finding about Gehenna, his father and his diabolical plans Rin decides to train hard and become a Exorcist.
Ao no Exorcist does an amazing job of world-building, the premise and the nature of the set of characters the anime establishes are amazing.
The anime has a strong backbone in the characters it possesses and the relationship they develop. The show has positives in its animation, creative world-building, and interesting plotline but it lacks in progressing the said plotline.
9. Nanatsu no Taizai
Nantsu no Taizai (Seven Deadly Sins) is an anime about a group of seven very powerful knights representing the seven sins of pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth.
The story takes places in a kingdom where knights have magical powers which are very varied and unique to themselves. The world of Nanatsu no Taizai is very extensive it has giants, fairies, humans, etc. even talking pigs.
The storyline has a lot of suspense and it always leaves the user with wanting more and more from the anime. The characters and their relationships with each other is also something I admire about Nantsu no Taizai.
It suffers some flaws in aspects like character development, except a few characters like Ban and King, most other characters are kind of stagnant but overall, the anime was very much worth the time I spent watching it.
Who said anime realted to demons and devils couldn’t be funny? Well if you were ever told that a demon anime can’t be funny, show this anime to the idiot who said that.
Beelzebub is a cute, adorable and a funny anime about demons, yeah you did read that right, “cute” and “adorable”.
The protagonist of the anime, Tatsumi Oga, a ruffian is chosen to be the parent of Beelzebub IV, the child of the Demon Lord. Tatsumi is a strong fighter and loves tormenting others, he has a thing for being cruel, all the qualities required to become the parent of a demon baby.
The comedic scenes in the anime are very enjoyable, the plot is also interesting, it will always keep you on your toes.
I remember watching this masterpiece, it has such a rewarding story it was as if I lived the story and I felt that it was me who was given another chance.
The story takes place in Old Japan, when Samurai were prevalent in the country. The lord of a village in the country offers up his own yet to be born child to 48 demons (12 in the anime) asking for good crops and a good life.
The organs of the baby like the skin, the eyes, the limbs are eaten one by one by all the demons and what’s left of it is pure chaos. The anime has a fair amount of gore and action and it is beautifully animated.
Watching this anime was a crazy experience, but as I said it was so rewarding how the story turned out to be and how it all ended.
6. Hataraku Maou-Sama
Ever imagined the Devil, the ruler of Hell, the strongest of all people in all seven hells working a part-time job in McRonald’s Well you don’t have to imagine anymore just watch Hataraku Maou-Sama.
This anime is the most genuinely quirky anime I’ve ever seen. It is funny, it is cute and most of all it is very unique. In my opinion the premise of the anime is very unique and creative.
The set of characters presented in the anime interact so well with each other and the relationships they develop over time are so rewarding to watch.
You will definitely enjoy this anime, it as action, comedy, quirkiness and romance!
5. Black Clover
The main protagonist, Asta, a child born without even a shred of mana but the will power strong enough to rival that of a Magic Knight obtains a grimoire with a five-leaf clover.
“The three leaves of clover represent faith, hope and love. Within a fourth leaf dwell good luck. Within a fifth leaf resides a demon”. Thus Asta becomes tied up with a demon from the Underworld.
The anime has a good plot with amazing character development arcs and even crazier openings. I kid you not but there isn’t even one bad Black Clover Opening.
4. Mob Psycho 100
One of my favorite anime of all time, it has the most quirky storyline with amazing characters. Mob is such an adorable protagonist and the premise of the anime is also so good.
The protagonist Mob, has very strong psychic powers, he can easily erase any spirits that are thrown at him but there is always a catch. On account of his powers going out of control, he cannot show emotions at all.
If he experiences strong emotions, he bursts out with a particular emotion to the maximum hurting everyone around him.
The premise of the anime, the characters and the world-building is absolutely spot on and along with that the beautiful art style is so pleasant to look at.
Mononoke is an anime set in Feudal Japan about a mysterious man called the “Medicine Seller”. The anime records him on his journey through the country where he fights monsters called the “mononoke”.
The main protagonist, Kusuriuri, who goes by, “Medicine Seller” fights these monsters but it is much involved in this exorcism.
He has to first psychoanalyze the Mononoke, he has to understand it, its form, its reasons, its truth only then can he wield the exorcism sword and fight the spirit.
The anime is an amazing watch! It has some intricate and detailed stories and so much content for you to think about.
2. Jujutsu Kaisen
The newest and probably the most popular shounen of early 2021. It got popular so fast, it is almost unbelievable. Jujutsu Kaisen has an amazingly written world with a good set of characters. The characters are partly the reason for its popularity.
The protagonist of the show, Itadori, eats a special grade cursed object and becomes a host for the King of Curses, Ryomen Sukuna, a really powerful curse. He then decides to become a Jujutsu Sorcerer, a profession that revolves around killing curses.
Curses in Jujutsu Kaisen are really interesting, these curses are actually physical reincarnations of negative emotions of humans. The concept is not new but it is very well executed in Jujutsu Kaisen.
Overall, the anime is definitely worth of its popularity right now, there is so much mystery and suspense and I think I’ll be speaking for everyone if I say I want to second season like right now!
1. Demon Slayer
Arguably the most popular recent anime ever! Demon Slayer is set in an alternate universe where Michael Jackson is a demon and he tries to kill everyone if you know you know.
Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer) is an anime set in a world similar to Old Japan, where Demons exist and thus exists the Demon Slayer Corps, an organization with powerful demon slayers.
Tanjirou Kamado, the main protagonist lives in the woods with his family, one day he comes home to them being slaughtered by a demon and one of his sisters, Nezuko turning into a demon. Tanjirou is an interesting protagonist, not only is he mature but he is even strong-willed and is always helpful.
The art style of the anime was one of the most likable aspects of the show, especially the animation of the breathing style sword attacks along with the character chemistry and the always interesting and suspenseful plot.
