Let’s begin the list of the greatest Ninja anime series of all time.

10. Harukanaru Toki no Naka

Harukanaru Toki no Naka ninja anime

Harukanaru Toki no Naka De is an otome adventure game and ninja anime developed by Ruby Party and published by Koei. It is a part of Ruby Party’s Neoromance label.

9. Sengoku Basara 9.

Sengoku Basara

Sengoku Basara is a shōnen anime set during the Sengoku Jidai, or ‘Warring States period’ of Japanese history, and is based on Capcom’s Playstation 2 video game Devil Kings (known as Sengoku Basara in Japan).

It should be noted that Sengoku Basara is a world away from the period from which it draws its inspiration—it’s not historically accurate by any means.

That said, a few features associated with the period, such as the rivalry between Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin, and the Oda clan’s use of firearms, are present.

The characters, for the most part, are all taken from the era, although how they are presented is highly fictionalized.

8. Senran Kagura

Senran Kagura

Senran Kagura is one of those titles that doesn’t pretend it is something high-quality; even the game it spawned from is all about clothing damage and huge jiggling breasts.

Once you move past the unrealistic expectations, it becomes something you can, er, actually enjoy.

7. Jubei-Chan

Jubei-Chan

Jiyu Nanohana is an ordinary schoolgirl until she runs across a 300-year-old samurai who tells her that she is the reincarnation of Yagyu Jubei.

With the help of the “Lovely Eyepatch”, she transforms into the legendary swordsman whenever she needs to use his awesome fighting ability, which she needs to do quite often as a rival clan is a dead set on conquering Yagyu to satisfy an old family grudge.

6. Donten ni Warau

Donten ni Warau

In the 11th year of the Meiji era, the Japanese population is increasingly dissatisfied with the government due to the increasing speed of Westernisation and the ban on samurai.

The government opens a new prison to curb the increased rate of crime.

The three brothers of the Kumo family—Chutarou, Soramaru, and Tenka—are entrusted with the duty of transporting these criminals to the new prison, but adventures await them on the way…

5. Ambition of Oda Nobuna

Ambition of Oda Nobuna

The historical romantic comedy follows 17-year-old high schooler Sagara Yoshiharu, who one day time-travels to the Sengoku period, where all the major Samurai lords are cute girls.

Yoshiharu meets Oda Nobuna, the girl counterpart of Oda Nobunaga, and begins to serve her as a substitute for Kinoshita Tokichiro, who has been dead in the world.

4. Basilisk

Basilisk

The year is 1614 AD. Two warring ninja clans, each supporting a son of Hidetada Tokugawa as the next shogun, sent ten representatives each to fight to the death for the possession of a scroll.

The prize: the annihilation of the other and the staunch support of the Tokugawa government for the winning clan for the next thousand years.

3. Ninja Scroll: The Series

Ninja Scroll: The Series

Fourteen years after defeating the immortal warrior Himuro Genma and thwarting the Shogun of the Dark’s evil plans, Kibagami Jubei continues to roam all over Japan as a masterless swordsman.

During his journey, he meets Shigure, a priestess who has never seen the world outside her village.

But when a group of demons destroys the village and kills everyone, Jubei becomes a prime target after acquiring the Dragon Jewel—a stone of an unknown origin.

Meanwhile, Shigure – along with the monk Dakuan and a young thief named Tsubute – travels to the village of Yagyu. And with two demon clans now hunting down Shigure, Dakuan must once again acquire the services of Jubei to protect the Priestess of Light.

2. Katanagatari

Katanagatari

This ninja anime is about the legendary swordsmith Shikizaki Kiki, who made over 1000 swords in his career. The more swords a state had, the greater success it had in the wars.

When the Shogun emerged victorious, he collected 988 of the swords — but those were just practice. The final twelve swords were the pinnacle of his career. Each of them has powers so extraordinary that one man could defeat small armies.

Shogunate strategist Togame has been ordered to recover them. She first hired a ninja… but the value of the swords was so great that the entire ninja clan defected the moment they recovered one. Then she hired a swordsman, but he kept the sword for himself.

Her last hope is Shichika, the seventh and last practitioner of the Kyotoryuu—No Sword School. He and his sister live on an island cut off from civilization—they do not need money.

His sword school does not use swords — he would not want the swords for himself. So why should he help her? “Because you will fall in love with me.”
