As soon as you step inside the Frostflow lighthouse, you can sense that something is amiss.

In the central room, the player will come across the lifeless body of a Redguard woman, accompanied by a Falmer sword. Next to the fireplace, you’ll find a Chaurus carcass and a wooden axe.

It seems that the woman tried to defend herself, but unfortunately, she didn’t succeed. The remaining area will be in a state of chaos, with the dining table in ruins and chairs scattered around.

At this point, the Frostflow Abyss quest will activate, prompting the player to investigate the mysterious murders that have taken place in Frostflow Lighthouse.

Although it is possible for players to complete this quest without delving into the notes and journals scattered throughout the location, it is highly recommended to do so in order to fully comprehend the story of the Redguard woman and her family.

If the player decides to search the woman’s body, they will come across a book called Habd’s Journal.

Upon reading it, one discovers that Habd was a sailor of Redguard descent who had diligently saved up his earnings to purchase the Frostflow lighthouse, which had caught his eye during his voyages.

He and his family settled into the place shortly after. In subsequent entries, Habd mentions that his wife, Ramati, has observed a recurring occurrence of items mysteriously disappearing in the cellar.

Meanwhile, Sudi claims she has been hearing scratching noises down there, so Habd decides to make the trip to town to purchase skeever traps.

The last entry in the journal was most likely written after Habd’s return, as it confirms that the deceased Redguard woman was his wife, who was tragically killed by a creature resembling a bug.

After that, Habd kindly explains that he will be heading down to the cellar to locate the rest of his family. He thoughtfully decides to lock the door behind him to prevent the creatures from getting out.

Indeed, the door to the cellar is locked. With some lockpicking skills, a Skyrim player can effortlessly gain access.

However, if you explore the ground floor a bit more, you’ll discover the hiding spot of the key. Inside one of the bedrooms, players can come across Sudi’s Journal.

She openly expresses her dislike for Skyrim and the Frostflow lighthouse due to the lack of activities available.

She mentions the scratching noises that she heard from the cellar. Initially, she believed it was her father or Mani, but her perception shifted when she heard the sounds once more, even after everyone had retired for the night.

Lastly, she mentions that Mani has a habit of entering the cellar without permission, so she discreetly placed his key in their mother’s cherished keepsake.

This cherished memento holds a special place on the fireplace. Before delving deeper, there is a wealth of information that the player can discover by exploring the family’s possessions.

There is a letter in the same room that Mani had intended to give to his sister. He mentions that he knows Sudi is falsely claiming there are noises in the cellar to prevent him from leaving, even though this is clearly not true.

Nevertheless, he remains determined to go back to Hammerfell. It’s probably the reason he spends so much time in the cellar, collecting things for the trip.

You can also find Ramati’s Journal on an end table in the adjacent bedroom. She brings up the issue of missing items from the cellar and expresses frustration with Mani and Sudi’s suggestion that skeevers might be to blame.

Nevertheless, a significant detail in Ramati’s Journal is her heartfelt commitment to Habd: “Upon his passing, I vowed to place his remains in the lighthouse fire, allowing him to forever gaze upon the vast ocean.” This note is essential for completing this side quest.

A Sailor’s Last Request

If the player decides to continue through the locked cellar door, they will discover that the entire lower floor is covered in snow and Chaurus are ready to launch an attack.

On the other side of the room, two shelves have been knocked over, revealing a hole in the wall.

Exploring this path will take the player to a vast cave system. In the near future, the player will stumble upon unique tents that belong to Falmer camps. In that initial area, they will discover the remains of Mani.

As you venture deeper into the cave, you’ll encounter additional challenges in the form of Falmer and Frostbite Spiders that you’ll need to overcome.

Inside a spacious cavern, they will come across Sudi’s lifeless body confined within a crude cell crafted by the Falmer. Next to her are two notes indicating that she was held there for an extended period of time.

In the initial page, it is mentioned that she was with her father after he was captured by the Falmer. However, her father was unresponsive and suffering from a fever.

In the second note, Sudi reveals that the Falmer had numerous other victims, whom they led further into the cave. She and her father heard screams coming from the depths, but no one ever returned.

At last, the Falmer took Sudi’s ailing father away. Later on, she ended her life using the dagger he had left behind.
Continuing forward, the player will reach the lair of the Chaurus Reaper, a significantly larger version than any other variant in the game.

However, defeating it will not result in the quest being marked as complete. After triumphing over the Chaurus Reaper and thoroughly inspecting its corpse, players will come across an intriguing discovery – Habd’s remains and the coveted lighthouse key.

The player can now easily return to the lighthouse by taking a convenient shortcut through the cave system.

After that, they should make their way to the highest point of the structure and carefully put Habd’s remains inside the lighthouse torch.

By doing so, the player fulfills Habd’s final request, successfully finishing the quest and bestowing the special effect Sailor’s Repose upon Skyrim players.

The story of Habd and his family comes to a close. The Frostflow Abyss quest is quite unsettling in the game, as it involves innocent people who simply wanted to live their lives in peace.

It’s quite evident that the land of Skyrim can be quite treacherous, where even innocent individuals can become victims of the hidden dangers that lie beneath its surface.
