GKIDS Releases Blue-ray of The First Slam Dunk

Additionally, later this year, the film will be released in a Collector’s Edition.

The film had a warm reception in Japan when it premiered in December 2022, quickly climbing to the top spot during its opening weekend.

Over its opening weekend, the film had an impressive number of ticket sales, reaching 847,000, and earned a substantial amount of 1,295,808,780 yen (approximately US$9.50 million).

In June 2023, the film had an impressive achievement, selling over 10 million tickets and earning 14.43 billion yen (approximately US$103.5 million at that time) in Japan. This remarkable success was achieved within just six months of its release in theaters.

Last July, GKIDS released the film in the United States and Canada, offering viewers the option of an English dub or Japanese audio with English subtitles. It was a friendly and long-awaited release for fans.

In its opening weekend in North America, the film garnered an impressive US$662,211.

The film was awarded Animation of the Year at the 46th annual Japan Academy Film Prizes.

Toshiyuki Matsui, the film’s producer, was honored with the 2023 general award at the 42nd annual Fujimoto Awards presented by Eiga Engeki Bunka Kyōkai (Film Theater Culture Association).

The film was honored with the Axis: Satoshi Kon Award for Excellence in Animation, recognizing it as the best animated feature film. Additionally, it achieved third place for Best Animated Feature in the Audience Awards category at the 27th annual Fantasia International Film Festival, held in Montreal, Canada.

The film received a nomination for Best Animated Film in the 16th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (ASPA) in 2023, alongside Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume (Suzume no Tojimari) film.

Koji Kasamatsu, a nominee at the 2024 London Critics Circle Film Awards, received recognition for his exceptional sound design in the film.

Inoue took charge of the film’s direction at Toei Animation and also penned the script.

The staff members listed include character designer/animation director Yasuyuki Ebara, technical directors Katsuhiko Kitada, Naoki Miyahara, Toshio Ōhashi, and Yū Kamatani.

The CG was directed by Daiki Nakazawa, while Yūta Ogura took on the role of CG producer.

The art was directed by Kazuo Ogura. Yota Tsuruoka and Koji Kasamatsu collaborated on the sound direction.
