Explaining Pokémon’s Strangest Resistances

When a type of Pokémon is resistant to an attack, that attack’s power is weakened. Unless they are very good at hitting the target’s second type, which lessens the resistance, resisted attacks do less damage.

A lot of the game’s resistances make sense. For instance, a Fire attack like Charmander’s Ember would be resisted by Squirtle, a Pokémon of the Water type. It’s easy to understand this resistance since water puts out fire. That being said, not all of them are as simple.

These are some of the strangest Pokémon resistances, along with some ideas about how they might have formed.

Why Does Grass Resist Electric?

Pokémon's Strangest Resistances

At first, this choice might look like a bad one. In fact, standing under a tree during a storm is one of the most dangerous places to be because you are more likely to get struck by lightning. However, this resistance makes a lot of sense when you think about the bigger picture.

Lightning hits trees because it wants to get to the ground and the tree sap is better at conducting electricity than air. Both grass and the tree themselves are not conductors.

Flying is an odd type. This report’s statistics are mostly hard to understand at first glance. It can withstand not only fighting but also grass, but it is susceptible to rocks. Until you consider the realities of flying, it just doesn’t make sense.

Naturally, a flying Pokémon would be high above the ground, right? It’s immune to ground and resistant to grass, so this makes perfect sense. When we think of fighting as a purely ground-based attack, the ground only makes sense.

Any rock could be used as a projectile, but a flying Pokémon would be unable to fight on the ground. Although, that Pokémon would be able to send attacks at a fight below it, which is why it is so good at fighting this type. All of this makes sense now.

The ground for electricity is earth, and grass is very close to earth. That makes sense: ground types are very good at blocking electricity, while grass types can only resist it.

Why Does Flying Resist Fighting?

Fairy Types Resisting Darkness makes perfect sense. As it turns out, many fairies are said to give off their own glow. Fairies resisting bugs, though. That makes much less sense.

I can only think of one reason for this: fairies and bugs would probably live in the same space, but fairies are smarter and more informed than bugs. Therefor, fairies are higher up on the list of things that fly around your garden.

Fairies also lack vengeance, so their attacks have no effect on bugs. Instead, they have a resistance that makes it easy for them to avoid getting hurt, as if they don’t want to fight.

Why Does Steel Resist Dragon?

Another resistance that doesn’t make sense until you look into it more. Because a dragon’s breath could melt steel, I initially thought it was potentially weak against dragons. We must consider the physical harm a dragon can cause, even though steel is weak against fire.

Type Dragon The only types of Pokémon that can stand up to them are steel ones. It makes sense for every Pokémon to have at least one type that can’t be used against it, so steel is probably the best call. This is due to the possibility that a strong enough shield could stop a dragon’s claw.

Why Does Fire Resist Fairy?

This resistance is probably a nod to folklore, where fae are traditionally thought to be weak against fire and iron. I can see why this would make sense since fairy types are also weak against steel. As they are super effective against dragons, Fairy Pokémon play to their natural strengths.

It makes sense that their weakness from the same fairy tales will also be used in play since fae are frequently depicted killing dragons in fairy tales.

Why Does Dragon Resist Water?

Dragons are super strong Pokémon who are frequently used as early challenges. People have said that it doesn’t react to fire, water, grass, or electricity because those are the most common types of Pokémon in the early game. Still, there is some logic to it as well.

Fire, which dragons can breathe, would burn grass. Sometimes they can bring rain, which can put out a fire. They hide out in caves, which might keep them safe from an electrical attack. Additionally, they can avoid an attack that comes from the water because they can fly.

Why Does Poison Resist Fighting?

Even though it seems crazy at first, this is another resistance that makes sense. Fighting is a physical act, and there is no way to actually fight a virus. You can use the phrase “fight a virus,” but it’s not really something you do. Punching liquid is like kicking a virus.

Poison is a liquid, so it makes sense that it resists physical types like grass, bugs, and fairy dust. Still don’t get why it’s weak to psychic, though; I think that one should be quietly brushed off.

Why Does Ground Resist Rock?

I struggle the most to understand the combination of ground resisting rock. Shouldn’t rock and ground cancel each other out? The only explanation is that since the ground is solid, rock would potentially have no effect on it at all.

I still think this should play out with them not being able to hurt each other, but it doesn’t seem to have happened. Although a large enough rock could still make an impact, I can only assume that because the ground would absorb any impact from a rock, it is considered resistance.
