How to Draw Anime & Manga Hands

It can be hard to learn how to draw anime, but it’s also a lot of fun!

And today we are going to talk about how you can draw anime hands or manga hands which both are the same things.

Anime is a mix of real life and fantasy, so use the world around you as a starting point and let your mind run wild.

Start with the shape of your palm, then add your thumb and fingers to make different motions.

Use your own hand to get the finger lengths right, and don’t forget to draw lines to show the knuckles!

Draw a round square to make the palm. Start your sketch with light, short strokes. You’ll have plenty of time to make it look more defined later.

Take a look at your hand to see how one side is a little bit bigger than the other. Don’t use your thumb or fingers yet. Instead, copy that shape on your paper.

As you work on your drawing, it can help to look at your hand or pictures of hands.

In anime, women’s hands tend to be small and thin, while men’s hands are usually bigger to make them look more scary.

Draw five circles on the palm of your hand, one for each finger and thumb. Place the circle made by the pinky-ring knuckle on the edge of the hand.

Make it the lowest circle, with the tips of the ring, middle, and pointer fingers slightly higher. Put the two knuckle circles next to each other so that their edges touch. To put the thumb in place:

Place the thumb-knuckle circle on the left side of the palm, about halfway down or lower, when drawing the back of the right hand.

Place the thumb finger on the right side of the palm, about halfway down or lower, when drawing the front of the right hand. This is also with the palm facing up.

Place the thumb finger on the right side of the palm, about halfway down or lower, when drawing the back of the left hand.

Place the thumb finger on the left side of the palm, about halfway down or lower, when drawing the front of the left hand. Here, the palms are facing up.

Draw the fingers based on the shapes you made for the knuckles. Use the circles on the knuckles to figure out where each finger should go on the hand.

Draw the longest finger, the middle finger, first. Then, use that length as a guide to draw the other fingers. Use short, gentle strokes to shape the sides and tips of each finger to get the general shape of each one.

In anime, fingers that are spread out can look like real fingers or they can be longer and thinner than fingers in real life.

You can play around with the proportions to make sure they look good with the rest of the figure you’re drawing.

You could also start by drawing the fingertip. It’s usually about the same length as the palm, which could help you get the proportions right if you want the hand to look real.

Draw the thumb sticking out of the circle at the bottom. Make the thumb mostly straight on the outside and slightly bent on the inside so it doesn’t look too stiff.

Curve the top part of the thumb so that it looks like your own thumb.

If you make a mistake, just erase it and start over. See what you like best by making the thumb longer or shorter.

Make small circles on the middle and top tip of each finger. Do this to give the hand you’re drawing some visual depth.

Seeing the circles will help you see how the fingers bend, which will make it easier to add smaller features later.

Make the circles on the top knuckle the smallest and the circles on the middle knuckle just a little bit bigger than that.

By doing this, you can also see if any of the fingers are crooked in terms of length or space between them.

Draw a picture of the hand, including the thumb, fingers, palm, and palmer side. After you have a general sketch, take your pencil and use light, short strokes to go over the shape of the hand.

Fill out the sides and tops of each finger, and keep going around the palm to strengthen each side.

For this last sketch of the palm and fingers, you could use a pen or marker if you feel comfortable. It will make it easy to erase your sketch lines without losing any of the outline.

Before you erase any of the sketch lines, make sure the ink is dry so the drawing doesn’t get smudged.

To make the hand look more real, add shading, wrinkles, and finger creases. Look at your hand and notice how it makes lines when you move it.

You could draw creases where each knuckle should be to show that the hand is slightly bent, and you could add lines to the palm to make it more realistic.

Most anime hands aren’t as detailed as “real” hands, so it won’t hurt your drawing if you don’t add as much detail. The most detailed parts of an anime picture are the eyes, hair, and clothes.

Get rid of the circles around the knuckles and the other lines inside the hand. Carefully remove each circle you drew for a knuckle with your pencil.

You should also erase the line between each finger and the palm so that everything is linked.

If you used a marker or pen, wait until the ink is fully dry before erasing any lines.

Tip: If you remove part of a real finger or the palm by accident, you can just draw it back in place.

Creating Different Gestures

Make a fist with your hand. You can draw a hand from the side, from the top, or from the bottom. First, draw a round square for the palm.

Then, draw circles where each finger’s knuckle meets the palm. From there, draw the shape of each finger so it looks like how it actually sits on the palm.

Keep in mind that when you make a fist, your fingers usually touch, so don’t leave any room between them.

Once you’re done, don’t forget to go back and erase the rings and lines inside them so that the hand looks as smooth as possible.

Tip: Use your hand or a picture as a guide. If you have something else to look at, it will be much easier to make the right shape.

Even between characters in the same anime, you can see that their styles are different. Find something you like and copy it until you can do it on your own.

Learn how to draw a hand holding something. In anime, characters often hold swords, weapons, or other things.

It’s safe to say that you’ll need to know how to draw this at some time. You might need a little more practice at first, but once you get the hang of this method, you’ll be sure of your drawing skills!

To show a hand with something in it:

  • Make a round square to make the shape of a palm.
  • Draw the thumb and fingers as if you were making a fist.
  • Add the real object on either side of the fist. It’s okay if you draw over the fingers; you can always erase those lines later.

Clean up your sketch by erasing the knuckle circles and extra lines, and then outline the hand and item with more definite pencil strokes.

Draw a hand that is relaxed and hanging down at the side of someone. Start by drawing a square with rounded corners to show the side of the palm.

Draw a second, smaller, rounded rectangle that covers the first to make the base for the thumb. Draw the thumb and pointer finger.

Make the end of the thumb’s tip face the middle knuckle of the pointer finger. Behind the pointer finger, add the tips of the middle, ring, and pinky fingers by drawing curled lines that go toward the thumb.

You can do this by drawing the hand by itself or by drawing an anime character and then drawing the hand from that.

From the side, you should be able to see 3 or 4 fingers when the hand is in a normal, relaxed position, but only parts of each finger.

Look at pictures of hands in this situation to get an idea of what looks more natural.

FAQs

Why is it so hard to draw hands?

Because hands are so complicated, they are hard to work with. You have to remember where the palm is, how long each finger is, and where each finger joint is. Plus, there are almost an infinite number of ways to pose your hands. Look at photos or your own hands in lots of different situations to learn how to draw hands.

How do you draw hands easily?

Imagine the hand as a pair of mittens. Try drawing the glove hand with the fingers open, closed, holding something, etc. After you have drawn the main shape, you can add features like the fingers and joints.

How do you draw creepy hands?

Some of the hands’ natural features can be played up to make them look creepy. For example, make the fingers longer than usual and give them knuckles and joints that stand out and look like knobs. Draw veins and muscles that stand out and look like they’re bulging. You can also make the nails look long, broken, and dirty.

How can I draw the fingers?

Use cylindrical and round shapes. Each finger has three cylinders and two spheres, and the thumb has two cylinders and one sphere. The spheres are where your fingers bend, so they are kind of like joints. With this method, you can use your hands as a guide to figure out how long each section is. Remember to make light pencil marks for these steps so that you can remove them if you need to. Once the hand looks right, trace the outside lines of the fingers to make them look like fingers. Get rid of the lines in the fingers.
