If you’re drawing a female character, put the mark at a distance equal to one-third of the circle’s width, since female anime and manga characters tend to have rounder faces.
Make a sketch of your character’s jaw. Start at the biggest part of the circle, either on the left or the right.
Draw a line from the side of the circle that is slightly angled toward the vertical midline.
Keep drawing the line until you get to the nose mark you made.
When the slanted line crosses the nose guideline, keep drawing it toward the chin mark.
To join your jawlines, do the same thing on the other side of the circle.

For your ears, draw long C-shaped lines between the guidelines so that they join to the sides of the circle and jawline. You can leave the ears as they are or draw the curves inside them to give them more depth.
- You can get an idea of what they look like by looking at your own ears or pictures of real ears.
- Ears can have many different sizes, so pick the one that looks best with your character.
Add the nose tip where the vertical and horizontal lines meet. From the front, the nose isn’t as noticeable in anime or manga as it is from the side.
If you want to make a simple nose, just put a dot where the vertical axis and the nose guideline meet.
For something a little more complicated, draw two short, curved lines on either side of the middle line to look like noses.
If you want to make your character’s nose stand out more, you can also draw a long straight or curved line going up toward the eye line.
Draw the eyes so that they are under the line you made earlier. If you’re drawing a man, draw a straight line that stops near the side of the head under the guideline you made.
For a female character, draw a curved line under your guide that goes to the side of your character’s head.
Place the bottom line of the eye anywhere above the tip of the nose. Draw the other eye on the opposite side of the face so it looks the same as the first.

- If you want your character to feel a certain way, try drawing different eye expressions. For example, a character who is angry might have narrower eyes, while a character who is shocked might have wide-open eyes.
Give your character eyebrows that are higher than the eyes. Start the line for your character’s eyebrow just above the corner of their eye, a little bit above the outline you drew before.
Draw a line with a small curve or angle that matches the shape of the top of the eye.
You can leave the eyebrow as a simple line, or you can make it into a square by drawing lines up from it. When you’re done with the first eyebrow, draw another one over the other eye.

Draw a slightly bent horizontal line to make a simple smile or frown for a mouth. Put a second, slightly smaller line under the first one to make a bottom lip look like it’s there.

Cleaning up and Finishing the Drawing
To clean up your picture, erase the lines. Use the eraser on your pencil or a block eraser to get rid of any lines that aren’t on the face or head of the figure.
Work carefully around any face features you’ve already drawn so you don’t erase too much of their lines. Continue erasing the rest of your drawing’s lines until only the face is left.
- If you made your lines too dark, they might not come off the paper completely.
- Use a tiny eraser to get into places like the eyes or ears that are hard to reach.
Make your character’s hair look fun. Characters in anime and manga can have many different hairstyles, so pick the one you think will look best on your character.
Don’t draw every single hair on your character. Instead, sketch the general shape of the style. Work lightly in pencil so that if you need to, you can remove and make changes.
Once you have a rough shape for the haircut, you can erase any parts of the head that are hidden by the hair.
Most anime and manga hair is clumped together and ends in a point. Look at how the hair of other figures is done to get ideas for how to style the hair of your character.
Tip: Practice drawing different hairstyles on tracing paper over your drawing so you don’t have to remove your character if you don’t like the style you drew.
Add little things to your character’s face, like freckles or lines.
After you’ve decided on the hair and erased the rules, add any details that will make your character stand out.
Add freckles, moles, or lines to their faces to make them look more interesting.
You can erase any jewelry or trinkets you don’t like if you draw them in pencil first.
You don’t have to give your character any more information if you don’t want to.
Use your pencil to shade the face to give it more depth. Use the side of your pencil to lightly add a shadow under your character’s chin, below their bottom lip, and in their hair.
