Toby Ascher, Producer of Sonic 3, confirmed that the movie will “take a lot” from Sonic Adventure 2. This was hinted at several times since the movie was first announced.
It has been widely assumed that a lot of inspiration was going to be taken from Sonic Adventure 2, the game where Shadow first appeared, ever since the ending of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (the movie, not the game) confirmed that Shadow would be a significant part of the third film in the trilogy.
Since then, there has been a lot of evidence that this was going to happen, from Crush 40’s Live and Learn earning to be in the movie at some point to its logo being an exact copy of the one seen in Sonic Adventure 2.
We just got more evidence, if you needed any, that Sonic 3 is very Adventure 2-coded.

In an interview about the upcoming Knuckles show, Sonic 3 producer Toby Ascher confirmed that Sonic 3 will “take a lot from Sonic Adventure 2.” This was reported by GamesRadar+.
Ascher says in the interview that Sonic 3 is one of the most exciting things the team has done with the franchise so far and that it “obviously” takes a lot from Sonic Adventure 2.
Anyone who has played a Sonic game before will know that Sonic 3 is going to take a lot from Sonic Adventure 2 just from Shadow being in the movie, but it does raise some interesting questions about what else is going to be in the game that is inspired by the game.
“It’s going to be this giant, fun, incredible movie that obviously takes a lot from Sonic Adventure 2 and some of the games that I know the core Sonic Team grew up loving.”
The conclusion of Sonic 3 will also take place on a space station, just like Sonic Adventure 2 did, according to allegedly leaked storyboards for the game, which seemed to confirm Jim Carrey’s return as Dr. Eggman.
The big question is what’s going to happen to Maria and whether or not she’ll suffer the same horrifying end as in Adventure 2. It seems very likely that’s going to happen based on Ascher’s comments.
