Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Goes on Hiatus

The 16th issue of Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine announced that Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe’s Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sōsō no Frieren) manga will be taking a break until the 21st issue in mid-April.

Viz Media has obtained the license for the manga and describes Frieren’s story:

The adventure has come to an end, but life continues for an elf mage who is just starting to discover the essence of living. Elf mage Frieren and her brave companions successfully vanquished the Demon King, restoring peace to the realm.

However, Frieren will far outlast the rest of her former party. How can she grasp the significance of life for those in her circle? Years after their triumph, the funeral of a close companion forces Frieren to come to terms with her enduring existence. Frieren embarks on a journey to carry out the final requests of her companions and discovers a whole new adventure..

Yamada and Abe introduced the ongoing manga in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine in April 2020. After a break, the series resumed serialization in March 2023.

Shogakukan released the manga’s first compiled book volume in August 2020, and the 13th volume is set to be released on April 17.

On February 20, Viz Media released the 10th volume in English. Since the anime premiered, the manga has increased circulation by 7 million copies. The manga has now circulated over 17 million copies.

The manga has been recognized with multiple awards, such as the New Creator Prize for the 25th Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2021 and the 14th Manga Taisho Award in 2021.

Moreover, the manga received nominations for Best Shōnen Manga at Kodansha’s 45th annual Manga Awards in 2021 and the 46th awards in May 2022.

The American Library Association’s Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table (GNCRT) featured manga in its top 10 list of the 2022 Best Graphic Novels for Adults Reading List.
