A new game compilation titled Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection is going to be released in 2025, according to an announcement made by Atari and Limited Run Games with the same name.
The first three Bubsy games, which were released on the Genesis, Game Boy, and Super Nintendo Entertainment System, as well as the controversial Bubsy 3D, will be included in the Purffect Collection.
Limited Run Games has stated that all of these games will run on their Carbon Engine.
Bubsy was initially conceived of as a competing mascot to rival Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog. He was created by a defunct game development company called Accolade.
The first game to feature Bubsy was released in 1993 for the Genesis and Super NES. It was titled Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind and was released for both consoles.
In the first Bubsy game, the titular orange bobcat, who possessed the ability to run and glide, fought off the alien Woollies and prevented the yarn ball supply of the planet from being stolen. The sequel to Bubsy was released exactly one year later.
As a result of its graphics and gameplay, the video game Bubsy 3D, which was released in 1996 on the Atari Jaguar and PlayStation, received many negative reviews from fans.
Before the release of Bubsy: The Woollies Strike Back in 2017, the series had been in a hiatus for twenty years, with the last game being Bubsy 3D.
With Limited Run Games at the helm, fans of the wise-cracking bobcat, Bubsy, will soon have the opportunity to experience the first adventures of the character.
Atari and Limited Run made the announcement of Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection during the 2024 edition of the League of Legends video game series by releasing a short video that was a parody of the James Bond film series.
As soon as Bubsy made his appearance, expectations began to shift, despite the fact that the title crawl was based on the James Bond franchise.
The bobcat broke the fourth wall by asking the audience if they were expecting someone else to appear on the screen.
He did this by kicking the letters that were displayed on the screen. After that, Bubsy pressed the button on the television remote control, and he immediately became frantic as a number of screen options, including volume and contrast, appeared incorrectly.
Following that, the trailer was cut to display the game’s logo as well as the release window for 2025.
Bubsy Will Return in The Purrfect Collection
Limited Run’s Carbon Engine, which enables games to be emulated on modern platforms, will be utilised by Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection and will be used in the game.
If one is to believe the Steam page for The Purrfect Collection, the compilation will consist of four different titles.
Bubsy can be found in the following video games: Claws Encounters of the Purred Kind, the Game Boy and 16-bit versions of Bubsy 2, and Bubsy 4D.
A retro documentary of the Bubsy series will be produced by Audi Sorlie of Digital Foundry, who has previously worked on Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore. The Purrfect Collection will be produced by his company.
Bubsy joins the ranks of other retro series that have received revivals from Limited Run Games and the Carbon Engine, including Tomba and Gex. It remains to be seen what modifications and improvements will be made to the upcoming Bubsy collection.
