18 Best Thunder Type Monsters In Yu-Gi-Oh!

I think we can all agree that Thunder Monsters doesn’t have nearly enough money to run.

In fact, there are only 98 monsters in the game that are made of thunder.

They have been mostly forgotten for a very long time. There are some thunder monsters, but they aren’t very interesting.

Well, that’s not true, because a few of them are really good. But I couldn’t find more than a couple that were good enough to use, so I made a list of the best Yugioh monsters that use thunder.

Maybe you have some ideas I haven’t thought of?

Still, I gave them a lot of thought and came up with these entries.

Note: I didn’t include characters like Batteryman and Watts because everyone already knows them.

At the time this was written, there weren’t many Thunder decks that made storm a good Yu-Gi-Oh!

But don’t be sad, Duelist, because there are many Thunder cards that can make your deck more exciting.

So, if you want to add a lightning crackle to your arsenal, whether for fun or another reason, this list should give you a lot of ideas.

I’ll talk about a few thunder monsters that don’t seem to fit into a pattern but are “similar” enough that they shouldn’t be ranked separately. These are Brohunder, Mahunder, Pahunder, Rai-Mei and Rai-Jin.

18. Zap Mustung

zapmustang.png 18 Best Thunder Type Monsters In Yu-Gi-Oh!

It’s a lot to say, so I’ll give you a minute to figure out what it means.

All done?

Zap Mustung can shut down a lot of enemy decks if you can meet its strict requirements.

Too long have we just watched as our enemies spent 5 minutes going through all of their summoning skills.

Even though it isn’t always useful, it will protect your life points until you find a way back into the game.

17. Thunder Sea Horse

thunderseahorse.png 18 Best Thunder Type Monsters In Yu-Gi-Oh!

This must be the opposite of Thunder Dragon. It does pretty much the same thing, but in a better way that fits with how things work today.

It’s actually a pretty great toolbox for a number of thunder decks because it lets you keep a lot of monsters in your hand.

The downside is that the new monsters have to have the same name, which might turn off the few thunder-type players.

16. The Ascended of Thunder

theascendedofthunder.png 18 Best Thunder Type Monsters In Yu-Gi-Oh!

The Ascended of Thunder is a great little thunder type card that is better than its Immortal version.

With an ability that isn’t very common, there aren’t many ways to use this monster, but if you do, it can be powerful on its own.

The price is the reason why it’s only 10th.

You might think that getting 5000 LP is great, but you won’t get it if this card is put back into your hand or deck or if it is sent to the graveyard.

15. Thunder King Rai-Oh

15 thunder king rai oh ygo card 1 18 Best Thunder Type Monsters In Yu-Gi-Oh!

We’ll start with a monster that’s getting old, but for a card that’s more than 10 years old, it’s still pretty strong.

Thunder King Rai-Oh is an LVL4 with 1900 ATK and 800 DEF. And while it’s on the field, neither player can add cards from their deck to their hand other than by drawing them.

And if your opponent Special Summons just one monster, you can send this card from the field to the Graveyard to stop that call and destroy the card.

The rules for these powers are strange, but this card can still cause trouble.

And the 1900 ATK is more powerful than most LVL4s.

14. Hamon, Lord Of Striking Thunder

14 hamon lord of striking thunder card 1 18 Best Thunder Type Monsters In Yu-Gi-Oh!

This card is low on the list because you have to send 3 face-up Continuous Spells to the Graveyard in order to call it. To be honest, that’s awful.

But if you can get it on the field, it is a very dangerous monster.

Hamon, Lord Of Striking Thunder has a huge 4000 ATK/4000 DEF, and when it kills a monster in battle, it does 1000 damage to the opponent.

This card has a lot of power.

It’s also a great defensive card, since your opponent can only fight with this card if it’s in defense position.

13. Batteryman Solar

13 batteryman solar card yugioh 1 18 Best Thunder Type Monsters In Yu-Gi-Oh!

In Yu-Gi-Oh!, there are a lot of Batteryman cards.

But this is one of the best, and it can help any Thunder deck.

Batteryman Solar is an LVL4 with 1500 ATK and 1500 DEF.

And when you call it, you can send to the Graveyard any Thunder monster from your Deck.

When this card is on the field and a Thunder monster is Special Summoned, you can Special Summon a Token that can be used as a material for your Boss monsters.

If you use more Batteryman cards, this card can use the name of any of them in your Graveyard.

However, it can still do that even if you don’t use more Batteryman cards.

So, this is a great way to get your field ready.

12. Zaborg the Mega Monarch

12 zaborg the mega monarch yugioh card 1 18 Best Thunder Type Monsters In Yu-Gi-Oh!

This card isn’t always good, but against the right deck, it can be very bad.

Zaborg the Mega Monarch is a Level 8 card with 2800 ATK and 1000 DEF.

Its first effect says, “You can Tribute Summon this card by Tributing 1 Tribute Summoned monster.” If you Tribute Summon this card, you can remove a card on the field.

The most dangerous part of this effect is that if you use it to kill a LIGHT monster, both players must send cards from their Extra Deck to the Graveyard up to the Level of that monster.

Here’s where things get bad:

If this monster was Tribute Summoned using a LIGHT monster, you get to choose which monsters your opponent sends to the Graveyard.

You already know how strong that can be.

11. Thunder Dragon

11 thunder dragon ygo card 1 18 Best Thunder Type Monsters In Yu-Gi-Oh!

Once upon a time, the Thunder Dragons were the best Yu-Gi-Oh!

They don’t see any play that is competitive right now.

But Thunder Dragons are still strong and can’t be left off a Thunder list.

Thunder Dragon is a Level 5 monster with 1600 ATK and 1500 DEF. If you throw it away, you can get two more “Thunder Dragon” cards.

You might think that those numbers are bad for an LVL5. You’re right, though.

But this monster is a stepping stone to much stronger ones, including one higher on this list.

10. Subterror Behemoth Voltelluric

10 subterror behemoth voltelluric card 1 18 Best Thunder Type Monsters In Yu-Gi-Oh!

We’ve looked at both useful and powerful monsters.

But if you want to take your time, this card is a great way to play defense.

The Subterror Behemoth Voltelluric is a Level 9 monster with 1900 ATK and 3000 DEF. It has a Flip Effect that lets you take control of an opponent’s Set monster until the end phase.

You can also do this more than once, since you can turn this card face down each time it’s your turn.

It’s always fun to steal your opponent’s monsters.

But it does depend on whether or not your opponent sets monsters.

If any of your monsters are face-down and you don’t control any monsters with their faces up, you can Special Summon this card from your hand as well.

This makes calling monsters much easier.

9. Mahunder

09 mahunder card yugioh 1 18 Best Thunder Type Monsters In Yu-Gi-Oh!

Bosses that do amazing things are great.

But you’ll never see them if you don’t have cards to build up your field in the first place.

Here, Mahunder can help.

It’s a great LVL4 with 1400 ATK and 700 DEF, and it gives you an extra Normal Summon each turn as long as you’re summoning LVL4 LIGHT monsters.

This ability can make it easy for you to summon an LVL4 XYZ monster or any other monster from your Extra Deck.

Even though it’s not the most impressive result, it can be very helpful.

8. Mist Wurm

08 mist wurm yugioh card 1 18 Best Thunder Type Monsters In Yu-Gi-Oh!

This creature doesn’t look like a Thunder creature at all.

But because of how well it works, I’m ready to look past it.

Mist Wurm is a Level 9 Synchro with 2500 ATK and 1500 DEF. When this card is Synchro Summoned, you can target 3 cards and return them to your hand.

This stops any effects from happening when the card dies or goes to the Graveyard.

If you get rid of three cards from the field, your opponent may be open to a full-on attack during the fight phase.

So use the power of this card and attack to win.

7. Some Summer Summoner

07 some summer summoner card 1 18 Best Thunder Type Monsters In Yu-Gi-Oh!

This is a great way to get your Thunder monsters out of the Graveyard and back into play.

Some Summer Summoner (what a name!) is a Link-2 monster with 1600 ATK that needs two Thunder monsters (Mahunder is great for this).

This card also has a strong effect that lets you throw away one card to bring back to the field a Thunder monster from your Graveyard to a zone this card points to.

This is like a Monster Reborn that you can use again and again in a Thunder deck. You can use it on your opponent’s turn.

Monster Reborn is called “Limited” for a reason.

6. Thunderclap Monk

06 thunderclap monk ygo card 1 18 Best Thunder Type Monsters In Yu-Gi-Oh!

If you can stop your opponent’s monster effects at the right time, you can end their turn and leave their field in a state that’s easy to walk right over.

Thunderclap Monk is a Level 4 monster with a good 1900 ATK/200 DEF and a Quick Effect if it is Special Summoned:

If your opponent uses the effect of a monster, you can sacrifice this card to cancel the effect and kill the monster.

This result is pretty good by itself, because it makes your opponent think twice before doing anything.

But when this card goes to the Graveyard, you can special summon a Thunder monster in Defense Position from your hand.

5. Thunder King, The Lightningstrike Kaiju

05 thunder king the lightningstrike kaiju card 1 18 Best Thunder Type Monsters In Yu-Gi-Oh!

Kaiju cards are some of the best at getting rid of danger.

The Thunder Kaiju is no different, though.

Thunder King, The Lightningstrike Kaiju is an LVL9 monster with 3300 ATK and 2100 DEF.

With its ability, you can give your opponent this monster instead of a monster from their side of the field if you sacrifice a monster from your side.

This gets around almost every kind of defense for effects.

The only bad thing is that you now have to deal with a monster with 3300ATK that your opponent has given you.

But this shouldn’t be a problem because every card effect is weak against Kaiju cards.

Just make sure you have something to do afterward.

4. Denko Sekka

04 denko sekka card yugioh 1 18 Best Thunder Type Monsters In Yu-Gi-Oh!

A lot of Spells and Traps are used in some of the most difficult decks to play against.

You can’t get set up with these decks, and they can swamp you with bad effects.

If you want to slow down this kind of approach, this is a good card to use.

Denko Sekka is LVL 4, and he has 1700 ATK and 1000 DEF.

And as long as you don’t control any set Spells or Traps, neither player can set or use any on the field.

This can really hurt a deck with a lot of cards in the back row and makes traps pretty much useless.

3. Lightning Chidori

03 lightning chidori ygo card 1 18 Best Thunder Type Monsters In Yu-Gi-Oh!

Interfering with the Draw Phase can be unfair, and cards that do it have ended up on the banned list.

Lightning Chidori is an LVL4 XYZ with 1900 ATK and 1600 DEF.

When it’s summoned, you can return a set card your opponent owns to the bottom of their deck. This can make it impossible for them to get it back.

Then, once per turn, you can remove a material to send one of your opponent’s cards from the field to the top of the deck.

This is cleanup that doesn’t destroy. And if you can put something useless on top of their deck, you can ruin their Draw Phase totally.

2. Prank-Kids Battle Butler

02 prank kids battle butler yugioh card 1 18 Best Thunder Type Monsters In Yu-Gi-Oh!

When you use this card, you are stuck in a Prank-Kids deck.

But as of this writing, Prank-Kids are very powerful and can beat many of the best competition decks.

One of their Boss monsters is shown here.

The Prank-Kids Battle Butler is a Fusion monster with 3000 ATK and 3000 DEF. It has a Quick Effect that lets you sacrifice it to destroy every monster your opponent controls.

It looks like Raigeki with legs.

Also, if your opponent sends this card to the Graveyard, you can Special Summon a monster that isn’t a fusion monster from there…

Are you sure you don’t want to play Prank-Kids?

1. Thunder Dragon Titan

01 thunder dragon titan card yugioh 1 18 Best Thunder Type Monsters In Yu-Gi-Oh!

Remember Thunder Dragon from earlier?

This is why a Thunder Dragon deck is good.

Thunder Dragon Titan is an amazing Boss monster with 3200 ATK and 3200 DEF. To Fusion Summon him, you need 3 Thunder Dragons.

You can also Special Summon it by sending a Thunder monster from your hand and a Thunder Fusion monster from the field to the Graveyard.

Aside from the great stats, whenever the effect of a Thunder monster in your hand is triggered, you can destroy a card on the field without targeting.

Also, if a card effect would kill Thunder Dragon Titan, you can get rid of two cards from your Graveyard instead.

So this monster is hard to get rid of.

If you use many effects from your hand, your opponent will lose every card they control and can’t do much about it.
