There are a lot of powerful gods in the God of War series and most of the characters which we see have their strengths and weaknesses along with a special meaning.
Of course, during the whole game, we see Kratos fighting with gods from Greek and Norse culture, trying to put them to the final test.
The following list presents these gods from the least to the most powerful according to their stunts, powers, and positions in the series.
1. Hera
Hera is an Olympian goddess and that gives her quite a lot of say, though not as much power as some of the gods. In the game God of War III, she is portrayed just as spiteful not as powerful as expected. She does partake in some of what occurs but her physical and magical presence is miniscule making her one of the weakest gods Kratos battles.
2. Hermes
Hermes is the god of the fields and also of the travels, he travels very fast. Although speed is a great asset, Hermes is not as powerful as some gods presented on this list nor as magically talented. Kratos is much stronger and the fight with him in the God of War III pretty demonstrated that stubbornness and agility alone can do nothing without power.
3. Hephaestus
The blacksmith and the son of Zeus, Hephaestus was also closely involved in the creation of powerful weapons such as Leviathan Axe or Blades of Chaos. But at the same time, while possessing such a brilliant crafting talent, he has less physical strength. In God of War III, his attempt to overpower Kratos is done very fast, therefore he is ranked near this rank.
4. Hel
In Norse, mythology Hel is the Valkyrie who took the souls of the dead to the underworld that is under her rulership. She has great power and control over the sphere of death but she does not fight directly. Her power is not as directly confrontational, which is why, in comparison with some of the gods Kratis fights against, she is not so dangerous.
5. Ares
Of particular interest Ares, the first god of war, is depicted as a muscular god who is very aggressive. He is very warlike and very dangerous but is very reckless and always gets killed. Kratos thrusts Zeus’s axe through Ares in the first God of War, though he does show that Ares is not unbeatable.
The Middle Tier: Heights With Strength But Not Divine Authority
Under this premise, this section picks out for focus gods that are forceful but do not belong to the highest ranks in the God of War world. They have some exceptional power but are not as strong as the principal characters.
1. Hades
This is a vengeful god that oversees the underworld and all that comes with it; the dead, torment, etc. Cleverness along with the mastery of souls and the ability to command spirits give him immense power, however, in God of War III Kratos defeats him and that power is demonstrated as mortal.
2. Baldur
In my opinion, Baldur remains one of the main defining characters in the Norse Saga. It should be noted that his damage cannot be taken due to the spell of Freya thus making Fénris nearly untouchable. However, his lack of sensing pain also proves to be his big letdown, as Kratos takes advantage of him.
3. Poseidon
God of the sea characterizes Poseidon and that means that he owns oceans as well as all the sea creatures. In the God of War III he demonstrates his might when fighting Kratos however, his reliance on water magic makes him a sitting duck on the shore.
4. Thor
Thor is a god of thunder and he works best of all as a muscular man. He gets to control electricity because of his hammer named Mjolnir. Despite his strength and skill Kratos manages to become smarter and outwits his opponents using his brains and sheer perseverance.
The Top Tier: Gods of Ultimate Power
This final section covers the gods who are right at the top of the food chain when it comes to the God of War franchise. Their skills are almost next to none and they are the toughest adversaries Kratos come across.
1. Zeus
Zeus is the oppressive ruler over the gods of the Olympus, and Kratos’ father, is an outright titan. He has mastered control over electricity and has brute-like strength and magical skills that are far beyond most any other enemy Kratos has faced. The epic battle that the two have in God of War III stands as evidence of the power of Zeus.
2. Odin
The god described as the Allfather of the Norse gods, Odin is mysterious, yet his impact is visible all across the Norse Saga. Odin stands out due to his intelligence and magical abilities which are never something Kratos would encounter as an enemy from mythology, and which put him among the most challenging gods the player is condemned to fight in the following parts of the game.
3. Kratos
At one point in the series, Kratos is not a god by birth, but he does gain his status and is as powerful as any god. His relentless drive, warrior ability, and special capacity to defeat gods qualify him to be considered among the most powerful characters in the God of War series.
