Even in some installments of The Legend of Zelda series, there have been characters delivering messages or phrases that otherwise have traveled in one or another way beyond those games to become Iconic Quotes among fans of the series. There are various ways for this to happen, but the two most recognizable are:
- The phrase becomes recurring in future titles, and therefore is cited by different characters.
- For some reason, the phrase becomes a meme among fans of the series, and the game from which the phrase comes gets more fame because of it.
1. “It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this.” – The Legend of Zelda (1986)
The first game in the series opens with this now highly famous quote from an old man who gives Link his first sword. From that time it has become associated with the beginning of any grand adventure.
2. “The passage of time is always unkind… It always goes faster than each one of us can withstand.” – The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)
The single most memorable moment featuring Sheik and insistent on Ocarina of Time philosophy is doubtless the following line, which is much of a foreshadowing of the game’s ultimate message which is the passage of time and the necessity to grow up.
3. ‘People were loyal and brave, if not stupid, because courage could not be forgotten.’ – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017)
The words said by Zelda recall a tradition of the continuation of bravery typical for the games of this series. By this world, we mean that courage is timeless but is also eternal.
4. ‘Well, well, I see you have met with a terrible fate, haven’t you?’ – The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (2000)
The Happy Mask Salesman you hear at the beginning of the game sets the tone for the Majora’s Mask which is filled with light of darkness. In my opinion, it is one of the most famous quotes of the series for it is often cited.
5. “Shadow and light are two sides of the same coin… one cannot exist without the other.” – The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (2006)
This quote from Zelda specifies the game’s message in twilight associated with the duality of light and darkness, which is one of the main focuses in the target game.
6. “Do not think this ends here… The history of light and shadow will be written in blood!” – The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (2006)
Zant does this stating in the history of the game Twilight Princess that the fight between the light and the dark is always on.
7. “A sword wields no strength unless the hand that holds it has courage.” – The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (2006)
This quote, spoken by the Hero’s Shade, delivers one of the most significant messages of the series: from which we can learn that only inner force is stronger than weapons.
8. “The wind… It is blowing.” – The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (2002)
Closely linked to Ganondorf one of his last speeches in The Wind Waker is rather philosophic. Said in the moments just before his demise this line points to the fact that change and fate are inexorable in the cannon of Zelda.
9. “Your true face… What kind of… face is it? I wonder… the face under the mask… Is that… your true face?” – The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (2000)
This was a question posed by the Moon Children in Majora’s Mask: an important question when talking about masks, about the potential, and persecution.
10. “The same wind that blows today will blow again tomorrow.” – The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (2002)
Daphne Nohansen Hyrule toward the end of The Wind Waker and how the two of them realize life goes on and hope will persist no matter how much is lost.
11. “The world will end in three days. Even then, what makes you think you can stop it?” – The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (2000)
This line from Majora is as doomsday-laden as the very quest given in the game and serves as a constant reminder to players that time is limited.
12. “Open your eyes.” – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017)
These are the first lines that Link hears once he wakes up from the long nap, which is, in fact, the awakening from the confrontation of the new villainy threat to Hyrule.
13. “I am the Hero of Time. No matter where or when I am, I will fight for Hyrule… and for Princess Zelda.” – The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)
Meeting the Master of Time Link has chosen his path of the rightful Hero of the Kingdom and its citizens proving his eternal function.
14. “May the way of the Hero lead to the Triforce.” – The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1991)
Precisely this line serves as Link’s blessing and directions on the way to search for the pieces of the Triforce in A Link to the Past game.
15. “The Goddess of Time is protecting you. If you play the Song of Time, she will aid you.” – The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (2000)
This quote aims to comfort the players and give them the tool; time is one of the main themes in the game Majora’s Mask. This quote aims to comfort the players and give them the tool; time is one of the main themes in the game Majora’s Mask.
The Evolution of Storytelling in The Legend of Zelda
As many franchise titles have emerged, every successive game in the Zelda genre is more complex in terms of the narrative strategies applied.
From Simple Beginnings to Complex Narratives
The initial Zelda games had fewer narrations and premises, but the advanced video games having narrative works such as Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess have much thickness, enthusiasm, sentiments, and characters.
Themes of Time, Courage, and Sacrifice
This general feeling is emphasized by the series’ motifs, which at least set the foundation for fans to chew on the plot’s themes of Time, Courage, and Sacrifice.
Character Development
Although the series often does not speak a lot, like, there was quite a development to their characters like Zelda and Ganondorf and how they affect the plot.
Impact on Players
The quotes emulating the emotions of the series are the feelings that the story of Zelda leaves instrumentalizing within the players even after exiting the game.
