A few years back, simmer PimpMySims4 released a mod called the Cult Mod to the community. This mod enabled players to create and manage their very own cults.
The mod was last updated in September 2021. There was an incident where someone pretending to be the original mod author shared what seemed like a “update” on ModTheSims.
However, it turned out to be a potentially harmful .exe file instead of a genuine mod update. It’s still uncertain what this is.The presence of the exe file is quite suspicious, even though its purpose may not be clear.
The cult mod has been removed from ModTheSims, but if you managed to download it during its brief availability, there is a possibility that your computer could be vulnerable.

Please remove this “mod” from your Mods folder if you downloaded it from ModTheSims. Thank you.
To bypass the Recycle Bin and immediately delete a file, simply hold down SHIFT+Delete.
After removing the file, it’s a good idea to run a thorough virus scan on your computer to ensure that any potential harm caused by the fake mod is detected.
What Happened?
It’s concerning that this incident occurred despite ModTheSims’ thorough approval process, which involves content review by a moderator before it can be uploaded.
There is a special provision for users who have demonstrated their ability to meet the upload requirements by having a track record of successful uploads. However, the account that shared this potentially dangerous file was newly created.
Based on my experience of sharing work on ModTheSims, it seems like the file might have been approved without proper testing by a moderator who was in a hurry.
The approval process for content nowadays tends to take quite a long time. It seems that my last submission took quite a while to be approved.
Given that moderators are volunteers, it’s possible that the site is currently understaffed. It’s understandable that they may not have the resources to test every item uploaded, even though they are doing their best.
Thankfully, they have resolved the situation and removed the upload.
Is It Okay To Use MODTHESIMS?
In general, it can be assumed that ModTheSims is a safe platform to use. This particular event should be seen as an isolated incident. Here are a few tips to help you further protect yourself:
- It’s always a good idea to check the comments before downloading anything, just to make sure that no one else has reported any issues with the mod.
- Check if the mod maker has shared the content on other platforms, such as Patreon, and compare the upload dates. It seems that the fake Cult Mod V.2 was recently uploaded, while the last update of the genuine mod was 16 months ago.
- If you come across a file on ModTheSims that catches your interest and was recently uploaded, it might be a good idea to wait a few days and check if the mod is still available.
- Make sure to run a virus check before launching The Sims 4, especially if you’ve recently installed new mods.
