Guide To Installing Sims 4 Mods

Adding mods can enhance your gameplay experience and give your game a fresh new feel.

Those familiar with The Sims 4 understand that playing the game can feel like wielding immense power.

You have the power to manage every detail of your Sims’ lives from the comfort of your couch, perhaps even wishing your own home and life were as exciting as theirs.

Perhaps you desire more control over your Sims’ dialogue, additional decoration choices for homes and lots, or a simpler method for cheating. This is where Mods can be helpful.

Mods are essentially alterations you make to the game.

They vary from small quality of life adjustments and enhancements to complete visual theme packs that fully immerse you in the game.

Mods are created by members of The Sims community, and there are countless options available.

Learn how to download and install mods with this guide, and discover some great options to explore.

Step 1: Turn Your Mods On

Make sure to enable mods in your game since a patch was released in 2015 that required players to do so.

To access the options menu, press ESC and then select the last option on the left-hand side, labeled “Other.” When you reach the “Other” options menu, you will find the “Enable Custom Content and Mods” setting.

Simply select the box next to that to reveal the green check mark and you’re finished.

Remember to perform this task every time a new patch is released and applied to your game, as it will always reset the mods to being turned off.

Step 2: Discover or Make Your Mods Folder

Finding your Mods folder should be a straightforward process as it should already be set up for you.

Every Mod you download must be placed in the Sims 4 Mods folder. My computer doesn’t automatically send files to the right place after downloading something. How about yours?

Typically, the files I download are saved in my download folder before I relocate them to their intended destinations. I would like my Mods to be placed in The Sims 4 Mods folder. Could you please provide the location?

Your Mods folder should be located within your Sims 4 file directory. If you’re unsure how to find the file folder, just follow this path: Computer > Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods.

The folder should already be available to you, but if it’s not, simply right-click in your Sims 4 folder, create a new folder, and name it Mods.

Your game will seamlessly incorporate any Mod you download and place into your Mods folder.

You have the option to create folders within your Mods folder to better organize and separate the files you have downloaded and are using.

It’s also possible to rename your mods after downloading them, just make sure to keep the .package extension at the end of the file name.

This will assist you in organizing all your stylish modifications effectively.

Step 3: Downloading & Installing Your Mods (.package Files)

Get familiar with the various file extension types you’ll encounter when downloading.

After you’ve identified Mods you find valuable (links to recommended sources will be provided at the end of this article), simply click on the download button for the Mod you wish to acquire.

Once the Mod selection has finished downloading, navigate to your downloads folder (or the location where your computer saves downloaded files) and find the Mod file you just downloaded.

There are various extension types for mod files, so I’ll explain them briefly.

If the file you just downloaded has a .package extension, you’re all set!

Simply right-click to cut or copy the file, then navigate to your Mods folder and paste the new .package file there.

The task was completed successfully.

Step 4: Downloading & Installing Your Mods (Zip Files & Script Files)

Do you recall this menu? Here’s how to enable Script Mods as well.

When you come across a zip file, simply double-click on it to open and see its contents. Are the files in there ending in .package or .pyo? Simply copy and paste the files ending in .package into the Mods folder.

Many zip files come with images and detailed instructions, so you can refer to them for assistance with this process.

On the other hand, if the files in the zip have a .pyo extension, you have obtained a script file.

Script files are used for script Mods, containing custom code that alters game functions, such as Sims interactions.

Script Mods should be copied and pasted directly into your Mods folder without unzipping them.

Another file type you might encounter is one with a .ts4script extension. As the file name indicates, this is a script file.

Simply right-click, copy or cut, and paste the file into your Mods folder. Remember, in order to utilize script files, you must ensure that the “Script Mods Allowed” option is enabled in the same menu where you activated Mods initially.

After you’ve copied your new Mod files into the Mods folder, you can launch your game and they should be ready to use.
