Elden Ring wouldn’t be the same without Dark Souls 2, says FromSoftware head Miyazaki

Because it had different directors, Elden Ring’s director thinks Dark Souls 2 was the ultimate help to the series.

In a new interview with IGN, Hidetaka Miyazaki, director of Elden Ring and head of the FromSoftware studio, talked about Dark Souls 2.

Some people think Dark Souls 2 is the worst Dark Souls game ever, while others think it’s the best in the series because of its open-ended game play and player-driven exploration.

“In regards to Dark Souls 2, I actually personally think this was a really great project for us, and I think without it, we wouldn’t have had a lot of the connections and a lot of the ideas that went forward and carried the rest of the series,” Miyazaki stated.

The director also agreed with IGN that Dark Souls 2 is the Dark Souls game that resembles Elden Ring the closest.

The only time Miyazaki hasn’t personally directed a game in the “SoulsBorne” series is with Dark Souls 2.

Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura, who co-directed the game while Miyazaki played a more supervisory role, were awarded that honor.

As time went on, Tanimura co-directed Elden Ring and helped make Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon. Shibuya, on the other hand, left FromSoftware to lead the Earth Defense Force series.

Dark Souls 2’s various directors, in Miyazaki’s opinion, made the game better in the ultimate.

“That different push gave us those different ideas and helped us make those different connections that we might not have had otherwise.” “The series probably wouldn’t have gone on the way it did without Dark Souls 2,” the Elden Ring director said. “I think it’s very likely that new directors will be appointed going forward.” And I think that if we do that, I’d like to step away from that supervisory role and give them full control and direction over those projects. “I also think this is the best and easiest way for them to do well in that setting and with those new projects,” Miyazaki said.

It appears that the FromSoftware studio head is gradually getting used to letting others take the reins, as Armored Core 6 was directed by Masaru Yamamura, who actually took over development from Miyazaki very early on.

It probably helps that Yamamura and Miyazaki previously worked together as Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice’s lead game play developer.

The Land of Shadow, a new map in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, might well be bigger than the big map of Limgrave from the base game.
