FFXIV: How to Unlock Gunbreaker?

With the release of the Shadowbringers expansion, Final Fantasy XIV now has a new tank job available to players: the Gunbreaker.

They employ gun blades and have a rapid, frantic playstyle that demands your full attention if you want to keep up your damage per second (DPS) and tanking skills.

Gunblades are a defining feature of the Final Fantasy universe, attracting legions of would-be tanks to Gunbreaker.

Thankfully, Gunbreakers don’t factor into the new class structure that was implemented in A Realm Reborn (2.0).

Gunbreakers stand out from other tank classes in Eorzea thanks to their reliable self-heal, targetable heal-over-time effect, DPS-like damage rotation, and terrifying invulnerability.

This job is aesthetically distinct from any other because of the quick cuts and the loud gunfire and explosion sounds.

They are a lot of fun to play and an excellent way for damage dealers to try their hand at tanking.

If you’re looking for information on how to obtain Gunbreaker in Final Fantasy XIV, you’ve come to the right place.

It’s hardly rocket science, but we’ll set you on the proper course.

Unlock GNB

In Final Fantasy XIV, getting any job is as simple as knowing where to look, and from there it’s a breeze.

Procedures Needed to Gain Access to Gunbreaker:

Unlock Gunbreaker

The GNB quest can’t be started until you have a level 60 or higher Disciple of War or Magic. Moreover, you’ll want to invest in the Shadowbringers add-ons.

There are no prerequisites in the Main Scenario Questline, however by level 60 you’ve undoubtedly come a long way.

In order to maximize your leveling experience, it is recommended that you focus on the Main Scenario.

Gunbreaker Quest

All that’s left to do now is make your way to New Gridania 11X, 12Y, where you’ll find the rest of the aforementioned goodies.

You can get the task “The Makings of a Gunbreaker” from the Gods’ Quiver Bow NPC. You’ll find the standard blue checkmark quest marker on the map to indicate their location.

We suspect that “The Makings of a Gunbreaker” is the game’s most complicated job quest overall. Follow your quest log to a location in The Shroud where you’ll face off against real players.

The Soul of the Gunbreaker job stone, a High Steel Gunblade, and the Outsider’s Attire Coffer with a full suit of armor is yours after chatting with another NPC.

With the 60-level bonus that comes with this job, a lot of the tedious leveling stuff is unnecessary.

Jumping Straight to Dungeons as a Fresh Tank

The problem with earning a level 60 increase on a tank job is that it might lead to complacency.

You don’t have to be a genius to be a good tank in Final Fantasy XIV, but you also can’t wing it. If you’re in the line for a dungeon and you’re a tank, you have to tank.

If you’ve never attempted something like this before, you might feel completely overwhelmed. You can start tanking those level 60 leveling dungeons like a pro with very little preparation.

Here are some pointers for playing a tank in group content in Final Fantasy XIV:

  1. Maintain a combat stance, like a tank. This ranks Gunbreaker in the same category as the Royal Guard.
  2. Turn aside from the group and face the adversaries. This is not required in all cases but is recommended.
  3. If there are three or more foes, you should use an ability with a wide area of impact.
  4. Put an end to your excuses! For example, “Aurora,” “Camouflage,” etc. These should never be used in a true emergency. Yes, I will keep my word. Their respawn times are very short. Use them to drag garbage or even the monster; the less strain on the healer, the more damage they can deal, and the faster you can progress through the dungeon.
  5. Stop trying to hide behind excuses… Because of its significance, I will stress this point twice. Nothing justifies putting them away; use them.

There will be some who urge you to make stronger pushes before you’re ready. The vast majority of players choose massive wall-to-wall pulls, but this is by no means necessary.

If the party wipes, there’s no need in pulling out all the stops, right? Follow the rules.

Playing Gunbreaker to the Fullest

Every occupation has an ideal order in which skills should be used, and tanking is no exception. It is in the nature of Final Fantasy XIV for all roles to maximize their damage output. Engage with it.

Gunbreaker’s rotation and action rate are both quite high. At roughly level 60, it’s a good time to understand the ins and outs of any profession by reading up on how it’s supposed to be played.
