“Which is better—sub or dub?” has been a running debate in the anime community.
However, in the case of Ghost Stories, which came out in 2000 and was released in 2000, the English version made a complete 180-degree change to the eerie vibe of this animation and became a cult favourite.
Ghost Stories, sometimes referred to in the form of Gakko no Kaidan, is an anime-based series based on a novel with the same name as Toru Tsunemitsu.
It follows the adventures of a pair of elementary school students—Satsuki Hajime, Leo, Momoko, and Keiichiro, Satsuki’s younger brother—in the supernatural encounters that occur in their hometown.
They are joined by Amanojaku, a demon hidden within the cat of Satsuki’s.
The series was a failure in Japan. In 2005, Animax reached out to ADV Films about the possibility of a North American release. Based on Greg Ayres (the voice of Leo) in the Q & A video of 2007, the company was only given three guidelines:
1. They weren’t able to change the names of the characters’ appearances.
2. They were unable to alter the names of ghosts since they’re based on authentic Asian myths.
3. They could not change how the ghost died.
The studio was inevitably given an abundance of freedom. With the freedom they had, the entire script was rewritten.
The children were cursing, hurling f-bombs, making references to pop culture (a popular gag was about Christian Slater’s professional career), and also employing crude, humorous, and offensive language.
The voice actors could break the fourth wall to ridicule anime tropes like “the standard anime elbows up pose”.
