After weeks of rumors and leaks, Shueisha has finally confirmed that The Promised Neverland (Yakusoku no Neverland) is getting an anime.

The Promised Neverland follows orphans Emma, Norman, and Ray. They live at the Grace Field House with other foster siblings and are allowed to do pretty much anything.

However, they are forbidden to leave the compound or go to the gate. The children think nothing of this simple rule until they discover the fate of one of their recently adopted sibling.

Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu’s series is a massive hit with readers – having over 4.2 million copies in print since launching in August 2016. Fans are hyped about the upcoming anime adaptation, and here’s what we know about it so far.

The Promised Neverland Anime Airing on Noitamina

The Promised Neverland anime

Fuji TV’s Noitamina anime block is revered for taking risks and fans always look forward to their seasonal projects. Noitamina has aired originals (Psycho-Pass / Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 Anohana) and mature adaptations (Kids on the Slope / Katanagatari Your Lie in April). However, The Promised Neverland will be unique among their diverse catalogue.

The Promised Neverland, which will be their winter 2019 series, is the first Weekly Shonen Jump adaptation to air on the block. Noitamina built a reputation for catering to fans outside of the typical shounen demographic, which should speak volumes about The Promised Neverland‘s story quality.

A vast majority of Noitamina series run for 11 episodes, with a few exceptions like Psycho-Pass and Shiki getting 22-episode runs. However, the anime’s episode count hasn’t been confirmed. Also, since 2016 all Noitamina simulcast exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.

It’s Not Your Typical “Weekly Shonen Jump” Anime

Weekly Shonen Jump is one of the industry’s biggest brands, which leads to early judgment. Most Jump titles are action-adventures that center around teenage boys overcoming obstacles, which can be a turn off for some. However, The Promised Neverland bucks the trends in a few ways.

The Promised Neverland season 2

The Promised Neverland is a horror-thriller, which is an oft-ignored genre. It further takes a risk by having a female protagonist in Emma, who is an 11-year-old orphan. The series is also devoid of campy humor, romantic subplots, powerups, and fanservice, which is a huge contrast from other Weekly Shonen Jump titles.

The Staff and Cast is Still Unconfirmed

Despite tantalizing rumors of Ufotable’s involvement, Shueisha hasn’t confirmed the anime’s staff or cast yet. The announcement video does include voices for characters Emma, Ray, and Norman, but the voice actors weren’t revealed. Fans will have to wait a little longer to get the juicy production details from Shueisha and Fuji TV.

The Promised Neverland season 2 Release Date

Season 2 is all set to air in October 2020. It is no big surprise as the suspense, and the gripping twists in each episode could never be found in any other anime.

The plot is kind of similar to the movie ‘The Island’, in the movie we see that in a futuristic time, humans are cultured for their organs or to give birth to babies, basically are treated as tools!? The same goes for ‘The Promised Neverland,’ the only difference is that the anime is way more interesting than the movie!

The Promised Neverland season 2 Cast

  • Mariya Ise voices Ray ( she has voiced Levy McGarden in Fairy Tail. )
  • Maaya Uchida voices Norman ( she has voiced Rikka Takanashi from Love, chunibiyo and other delusions)
