As stated in Death Note 13: How to Read, “he is only able to display his true deductive powers when he has the support of his members.” The book also states that Near is distant from people because he is sensitive.

Near is rather codependent, as seen when he asks Rester to accompany him on his flight to Japan due to having never flown alone.

Early on in the main visual novel, he is very indecisive, unable or unwilling to choose among the women he comes across, possibly because he doesn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.

Sasaki will usually pay Ishihara to send prisoners to him so he can violate them; something that Ishihara himself finds pleasure with, due to his sadistic nature. In the past, Sasaki violated one of Sakuragi’s former cellmates, Hagino, resulting in the boy committing suicide.

Sasaki, like Ishihara, wants to kill Sakuragi before he leaves the school because Sakuragi has knowledge of Sasaki’s crimes and can prove them.

After leaving the reformatory he aims to be a mayor, however his plans break apart when the six boys force him to confess all his crimes, which after being recorded are announced at a public broadcast.

Though Shinji denies it, he yearns for praise, and he eventually begins to pilot Unit-01 to gain the approval and love from his father.

He also continually tells himself “I mustn’t run away!”, further demonstrating his need to move forward and let go of the past.

Shinji shows a great fear of emotional pain and of being hated or left behind, likely due to his perception of being abandoned in his youth and, subsequently, blaming himself for not being good enough to make his father stick around.

He lacks confidence and is usually submissive to confrontation. He is well aware of and fears Yuno’s insanity regarding him, but has a strong desire to keep her sane, often forgiving her for her mistakes and keeping her from murdering others.

Yukiteru has little desire to become a god, trying to form alliances with other diary holders and mainly fighting out of self-defense.
