Misty Step 5e D&D Guide

Imagine this: You are a level 3 wizard class and you are running towards the gates. Everyone else in your party is already past the gate.

You use one of your spells to eliminate the monster that is too close to you and then run towards the gates. The portcullis was already closed by the time you entered it.

You have low hit points and are surrounded by monsters that you can’t defeat on your own.

Your party members are desperately trying to save you but can’t see through the gates. What should you do?

Spellcasters can cast spells with different effects and are extremely powerful. There are many spells that spellcasters can choose from.

This allows them to be creative in their spells and solve any situation. The Misty Step spell is a very useful spell that can be used to escape danger.

Misty Step lets you teleport to other places, much like Blueno or Nightcrawler in One Piece. It is highly recommended as one of the most powerful spells in the book. Many recommend it as a must-have spell in your arsenal.

To learn more about how it works and what you should do to cast it, as well as whether you should own it, check out our Misty Step 5e Guide.

What’s Misty Step?

Misty Step, a level 2 conjuration spell, can be found in The Player’s Handbook on page 260. Conjuration spells are used to bring creatures, materials, or other items from another place to the caster.

Conjuration spells can also be used to send other creatures, materials, and the like from the caster or nearby to another space. Here are some key facts about the Misty Step spell.

  • Misty Step
  • 2nd-level conjuration
  • Casting time: 1 bonus action
  • Components: V
  • Duration: Instantaneous

This article contains additional information on how to cast the spell, as well as how it works once it has been cast.

Misty Step

Misty Step requires that one follows the rules for casting the spell, including meeting the requirements. The requirements are listed below so that readers can follow along like a checklist.

  • This spell must be included in the spell list of the caster, e.g. This spell can be used as a race feature or class spell.
  • Misty Step is a level 2 conjuration spell. Therefore, the caster should have at least one level 2 spell slot that can be expended. Misty Step is a level three or higher spell slot. There are different levels of availability for level two spell slots. Make sure you check the “Spell Slots Per Spell Level” tab to find out which class has them.
  • To use the spell, the caster must have a bonus action. This spell cannot be used as an action. Remember that bonus actions are only available once per turn.
  • The spellcaster must be able to speak freely and without restrictions. The spell requires that the caster speak certain magical incantations with an audible voice to make it work.

After you have met all the requirements, you can cast the Misty Step spell. Misty Step lets you teleport to any location you choose. Follow the below instructions to do this.

  1. The caster must select an unoccupied spot; it must be at least 30 feet from the caster, and easily visible to him.
  2. To cast this spell, the caster must use their bonus actions.

What does Misty Step do?

The spell will be activated once all the requirements for Misty Step have been met. The spell is instantly activated by a silvery mist that surrounds the caster.

It then teleports them to their desired location. By then, the silvery mist would have dissipated. Keep in mind that only casters need to be able to see the place they choose.

They can cast Misty Step even if they’re looking through a portcullis or glass window.

Only the spellcaster can be teleported because it has the “self” range. Misty Step does not have any additional effects when cast on spell slots with higher levels, although that can still be done.

Misty Step does not require saving throws or spell save DCs. The caster can simply teleport to any place they wish to as long as their vision allows them to.

Classes

Misty Step is a spell that’s very accessible. The spell is only available to three classes, but it’s possible for subclasses to access it. The spell’s source and three main classes that have access to it are listed below.

  • Sorcerer (Player’s Handbook, page 99)
  • Warlock, (Player’s Handbook page 105)
  • Wizard (Player’s Handbook page 112)

The Wizard and Sorcerer classes both have two 2nd-level spell slot slots. These are required to cast Misty Step when they reach level 3.

Two 2nd-level spell slots are also available to the Warlock class, but they lose their lower-level spell slots in comparison to the Wizard and Sorcerer classes.

Subclasses

You can have up to seven subclasses that come from different sources and access the Misty Step spell.

Both the Eldritch Knight fighter and the Arcane Trickster Rogue have access because they have access to the Wizard class spell lists.

Misty Step can also be cast by druids who have selected the coast as their home during the Circle Spells subclass function. This spell is not compatible with the daily prepared spells of the druid.

Does Misty Step work?

Although it is subjective, Misty Step can be a very good spell for many reasons.

Pros

The spell is the first cast as a bonus. You can cast a spell and attack with a weapon or any other moves that would cost you action, then cast Misty Step as an additional bonus action.

You can, for example, cast the Witch Bolt spell on an enemy within your range and then teleport away with Misty Step by using your bonus action. This spell is great for escaping from any unfortunate situations.

The spell works by only speaking incantations. This spell is very useful for situations in which you can’t move your hands.

To escape an enemy’s grapple, you can use Misty Step. Normally, in order to escape a grapple, the creature must make an Acrobatics or Athletics check. An Athletics check must be made by the creature grappling.

The rolls are then compared. The higher roll means that the creature being wrestled will break free of the grapple.

The grapple will not end if the creature being grappled has a higher roll. Spellcasters don’t usually have high Strength (Athletics), or Dexterity(Acrobatics), because they must prioritize their spellcasting abilities instead. Misty Step is a simple solution to this problem.

To use the spell, thirdly, all you need is to be able to see the place you wish to teleport. Misty Step can be used to teleport the caster anywhere they are, whether they are in jail, a cage or on another side of a wall.

Misty Step is a powerful spell that can be used to escape restrictions. It is useful for reaching difficult-to-reach areas or infiltrating.

If you have difficulty reaching a steep cliff, Misty Step can be cast to teleport you there (as long it is within 30 feet) without any effort, items, or wasted time.

You don’t need the key to enter a locked room, but you can see through it with a hole. Misty Step will allow you to teleport inside the room using a Misty Step.

Voila! You can also open the door from inside, so your party members can also get in.

The Misty Step spell has its benefits, but it can also be rendered inoperable if the caster is unable to speak due to physical or magical restraints, or any other reason.

It may also become unusable if they are unable to see the area they wish to teleport. They might have lost their vision due to magic or a fog. If the caster also has darkvision, it could only work in darkness.

The enemy must either close their mouth or blind you by covering your eyes with a cloth. Once that is done, the caster can no longer escape their cages using Misty Step.

To be able to know this limitation, the enemy must also have knowledge of the arcane.

Misty Step can also be a level 2 spell. This spell might prove to be too taxing for characters who are just beginning to learn level 2 spells.

When leveling up, sorcerers or warlocks have limited access to spells. This problem is not a problem for wizards.

They can prepare a list after a long rest so that they can swap Misty Step with another level 2 spell from time to time.

Misty Step cannot teleport anyone else, but can only be used to teleport the caster. It would not be able to save the entire party from dire situations.

It is a very selfish spell. Despite all that, the benefits Misty Step offers far outweigh its drawbacks.

This is subjective, so you can decide. Maybe you believe there is a problem with Misty Step. It’s up to you.

FAQs

Is Misty Step an action or reaction?

Misty Step can be cast by using your bonus action. Misty Step cannot be cast as a reaction or as an action.

Can I Misty Step in the Air?

Yes, provided the air is not occupied and within 30 feet of you. You must also be able to see the air you wish to teleport into. If you’re unable to fly or levitate, you will fall when you teleport into the air.

Can I Misty Step With Someone?

No, you cannot. Misty Step targets only the caster. Unless a magical effect allows self-target spells to target other people, you cannot teleport yourself.

What is the best way to get a misty step out of a grapple?

Yes. As long as you are able to speak, yes. Misty Step doesn’t require its caster to move its hands in order to work. You can use Misty Step to free yourself from a grapple.

Can Misty Step prevent or mitigate fall injuries?

It all depends. There is no rule regarding teleportation spells maintaining momentum in a fall. It really depends on the DM if they will let you land safely with Misty Step. It is a creative way to solve the situation and it looks cool. Others want to be realistic and force you to take fall damage. If you land safely, some DMs will even allow you to roll.

Can Misty Step pass through walls?

Yes, if there’s a hole in the wall on the other side that you can see through, then you can. To use the spell, you only need to be able to see the place where you want to teleport. It would not work if it was a wall with no holes.

Can Misty Step be counter-spelled?

The spell works by silencing or blinding its caster. To use the spell, you must be able to speak and see the area you wish to teleport. This can be done by many other spells, such as Silence and Fog Cloud.

Can I Misty Step without a mount?

Your mundane mount cannot be brought along when you teleport using Misty Step. You can however teleport a mount using the Find Steed or Find Greater Steed spells. It states that you can use any spell targeting the self with the mount.

Can I cast Misty Step or another spell?

Yes, provided that the other spell is cast as an action. Misty Step can be cast as a bonus action. You can then cast another spell and Misty Step afterward.

What’s the difference between Dimension Door and Misty Step?

Misty Step, a level 2 conjuration spell, allows you to teleport anywhere within 30 feet of you so long as you can see unoccupied destinations. Dimension Door, on the other hand, is a level four conjuration spell that allows you to teleport anywhere within 500 feet. Dimension Door can also bring along someone else, something that Misty Step cannot do. Dimension Door is an overall more powerful spell, which is evident given the differences in their levels.
