FFXIV: What Do Commendations Do?

When you use the Task Finder, you will be queued up with a group of random players for an instanced duty (such as a trial or dungeon).

You can show your appreciation for the other players’ efforts by awarding them commendations at the end of the instance.

There is no right or wrong reason to praise other athletes.

Do you have a Paladin in your party with a funny pull macro? Take this as a token of my appreciation for all your hard work.

What, the white mage used a clutch Rescue on the last boss, saving your rear end? Please accept this praise as my sincere appreciation.

Perhaps you’re simply a fan of the samurai’s dashing good looks.

Once more, it is entirely up to you to select who in your party deserves praise. If you’re not in the giving mood, you don’t have to praise anyone at all.

In Final Fantasy XIV, both the giver and the receiver of a commendation enjoy tangible rewards. Let’s see if we can figure out what those might be.

Receiving Commendations

Commendations

Each member of the party can give you praise in any given situation. This means that the most praise you may obtain for completing a dungeon is 3, whereas the most praise you can receive for completing a trial or raid is 7.

You can get praise from the people in your premade party if you go into an instance with them.

The game keeps a tally of your praise and gives you bonuses when you reach specific benchmarks.

These are some of the benefits you can expect to reap if you are frequently recognized for your outstanding work:

To become a mentor in Final Fantasy XIV, you need to have completed the quest “Leaving a Better Impression I.”

The Character submenu of your menu will show you your current commendation total. Click on the “Reputation” menu item once you’re there.

You will see a “You received a player commendation” display in your chat box once you have exited the instance if you have been commended. Once per commendation, the message will be displayed.

Giving Commendations

A notification for Player Commendations will appear in the bottom right corner of the screen after the instance’s final boss has been defeated.

Once you click it, a window will go up with a list of your party members, from which you can select one individual to give a commendation.

Keep in mind that if a player leaves the instance before you get a chance to praise them, they won’t be on the list.

Giving commendations to other players has its benefits, however, they aren’t as spectacular as a golden mount. If you complete the Challenge Log entry titled “Exercising the Right,” you will receive 1,000 Gil and 10% of the experience points required to advance to the next level.

You must congratulate other players a total of 5 times to complete this challenge.

This resets each week on Tuesday at 1:00 AM PDT, so you can only do it once per week.

At level 15, you can get “Rising to the Challenge” from I’tolwann in Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks and gain access to the challenge log (X:11.5, Y:10.9).
