Frog Pokemon are quite impressive.
Given the vast number of Pokemon in the series and the strict limit of six for a team, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to determine which ones deserve those coveted party slots.
Considering personal preferences, it’s time to select a theme, and what could be more delightful than adorable little frogs?
They have an interesting mix of cuteness and uniqueness, with their wild bouncing and those tongues!
Unparalleled terror. In a nutshell, they’re absolutely ideal. Interestingly, the Pokedex doesn’t have a wide variety of Pokemon that are based on frogs and toads.
Here Is a List Of All Toad And Frog Pokemon
17. Tympole’s
It’s important to consider that Tympole’s performance may be seen as coming in last place, but it’s worth noting that Poliwag set the precedent and arguably performed better.
Of course, it’s a matter of personal opinion, but Poliwag’s design does not include any warts. Oh yeah, those small objects on either side of Tympole’s head aren’t actually headphones, pals.
It’s worth noting that the Pokedex entries for the later stages of its evolution describe those visuals as warts, which are a common feature on toads.
16. Tadbulb
Tadbulb is a new addition to the world of Pokemon, making its debut in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. It belongs to the same family as other tadpole Pokemon like Poliwag and Tympole.
Unlike the other Pokemon mentioned, Tadbulb is not a Water-type. Instead, it is an Electric-type and its appearance is inspired by a lightbulb.
The bright yellow colour scheme of this Pokemon sets it apart from other frog and tadpole Pokemon that are mostly blue, while also effectively conveying its lightbulb theme.
15. Frogadier
Not many people tend to favour middle evolutions. They’re usually slightly edgier variations of the small thing or slightly slimmer versions of the big thing.
Occasionally, they make an appearance, but those are typically chrysalides and can be quite unsettling. Frogadier is a middle evolution that meets the necessary requirements without standing out in any particular way.
Just by glancing at it, it’s clear that it falls within the realm of Froakie and Greninja. It’s nice to see that the anime has a lively and enjoyable vibe.
14. Poliwag
Poliwag is a classic frog Pokémon that hails from the original generation. It’s widely known that its design is inspired by translucent tadpoles, giving its little swirly tummy the appearance of aestheticized intestines.
While some may find this objectively gross, many find it adorable, resembling a living plushie.
According to certain Pokedex entries, it appears that this creature is more adept at swimming than walking, given its short feet.
As it evolves, Poliwag undergoes a transformation, shedding its amphibian-like appearance and taking on the form of a miniature boxer.
13. Palpitoad
Palpitoad is the intermediate stage in the evolution of Tympole. In addition to some additional features, this evolution gains a secondary Ground typing, creating an intriguing combination with Water, albeit making it more susceptible to Grass attacks.
This peculiar creature bears a striking resemblance to a character from Veggietales, rather than a typical toad.
However, its cheerful smile exudes an unwavering can-do attitude, seemingly unaffected by rational thinking.
Playful. That’s it. Palpitoad has a quirky nature, which adds a touch of humour considering how different its evolution is.
12. Ivysaur
The internet was filled with astonishment when it discovered the fascinating amphibious influences behind the creation of the Bulbasaur evolutionary line.
And, to be honest, if you look closely, the body shape has a somewhat frog-like appearance. Perhaps the mouth could be included as well?
And yet, when it comes to middle evolutionary forms, Ivysaur stands out as particularly intriguing.
It’s hard to deny that the design of the bulb is really cool, even though it still has a slightly edgy vibe.
11. Poliwrath
Poliwrath is the fully evolved form of Poliwag and, despite its added Fighting typing, it simply has a more assertive demeanour compared to Poliwhirl.
It’s hard to see how a slight difference in colour could warrant a whole new evolution. Poliwrath is much more similar to a shiny Pokémon than it is to a one-of-a-kind creature.
Additionally, there is another alternative available for trainers seeking a fully evolved Poliwag. However, that will be discussed at a later time, so please continue reading.
10. Seismitoad
Seismitoad may not have the most adorable appearance, but it definitely has a unique and cool vibe. Despite the unsightly wart protrusions all over its body, that is.
Throughout every generation of Pokemon, the Pokedex entry for Seismitoad never fails to mention its unique features. It utilises them on its fists to deliver formidable punches.
Interestingly, its entry in Pokemon Sword and Shield also implies that it possesses a more gentle nature and utilises its warts to provide a soothing vibrating massage to individuals. Feeling a bit unsettled?
9. Bellibolt
The EleFrog Pokemon Bellibolt has an endearing and amiable appearance, along with a certain charisma, as it is showcased in the Gym Leader Iono’s live streams.
Upon initial observation, one might mistake the protrusions on the side of its head for eyes.
The rice ball-shaped body of this creature may appear incredibly huggable, but be cautious.
Its stomach generates a significant amount of electricity, so cuddling it could result in an electric shock.
8. Croagunk
Croagunk is a Pokemon with a captivating colour palette and a distinct design feature.
The creature has vibrant orange sacs on its face that bear a striking resemblance to the “vocal sacs” found on real frogs.
These sacs play a crucial role in producing the endearing ribbit sound. However, they do possess something quite unsettling, unlike a real frog. Its face contains sacs filled with poison.
In a world as fast-paced as the Pokemon universe (what is their world called, anyway?), having a companion who can help you unwind could be quite advantageous.
7. Venusaur
Alright, it’s a bit more noticeable to see the amphibious influences in Venusaur compared to the other members of the Bulbasaur evolution line.
It seems like that wide mouth has likely consumed quite a few flies, after all. That being said, this chubby dino is too big for even a Ludicolo sombrero to serve as a lily pad.
Despite the pleasant descriptions of its flower and aroma in its Pokedex entries, Venusaur is not just a friendly Grass-type, but also a Poison-type, which adds an element of danger to its seemingly pleasant attributes.
6. Toxicroak
Toxicroak is a highly formidable Pokemon in the game, and it stands out as the most lethal among all the frog Pokemon.
In Pokemon Diamond, the Pokedex entry mentions that its knuckle claws secrete a highly potent toxin, which can be extremely dangerous even with just a minor scratch.
Interestingly, every Pokedex entry highlights the toxic nature of Toxicroak, underscoring the unfortunate lack of affection it has experienced for quite some time.
Toxicroak is a must-have for trainers who appreciate a certain edgy aesthetic.
5. Greninja
Given their name, it’s no surprise that Greninja are incredibly swift on their webbed feet. And that expectation is easily fulfilled because Greninja boasts an impressive speed stat.
Trainers who are experienced in the field appreciate Greninja for its potential to become a formidable asset to any team when equipped with the appropriate moves.
Of course, Greninja’s design may not be what one would typically expect from a frog, given its impeccable taste in tongue-scarves.
However, the design is incredibly intriguing and one-of-a-kind, making Greninja a must-have for everyone. There are actually six of them.
4. Froakie
It was quite clear which starter Pokemon was the crowd favourite when the sixth generation was released.
With its captivating art, hilarious memes, and countless tweets, Froakie had undoubtedly captured the hearts of the fandom.
It’s worth noting that Froakie gained popularity even before its evolutionary line was released, proving its success without the assistance of Greninja.
That being said, it’s quite disappointing that it didn’t evolve into a big, fluffy cloud frog with those adorable poofs around its neck. It seems like Nintendo refuses to acknowledge this missed opportunity.
3. Poliwhirl
The evolution line of Poliwhirl is truly remarkable. The design, with its timeless simplicity, beautifully captures the life cycle of a frog and remains easily recognisable even after all these years.
That being said, when you compare Poliwhirl to its real-world inspiration, it’s quite peculiar.
The swirl pattern on Poliwhirl is thought to be inspired by a certain type of see-through tadpoles and frogs.
The skin of these frogs is so clear that their intestines are visible through their bodies.
So… yeah, that adorable little mark on its tummy? That appears to be an organ. Yuck.
2. Bulbasaur
Bulbasaur is clearly a dinosaur. It’s common knowledge. To say otherwise is highly disapproved by Arceus, our one true god.
It seems to have taken some inspiration from frogs, and no matter how you choose to describe Bulbasaur, it will always be considered one of the best in its category.
He’s the ultimate third-wheel, often overshadowed by Squirtle or Charmander, but he truly deserves all the love and respect in the world.
Let’s just take a moment to admire that adorable, cheerful bulb of garlic and appreciate its flawless nature, exactly as Arceus intended.
1. Politoed
When people are prompted to envision a cartoon frog, it’s likely that they’ll conjure up an image similar to Politoed.
Even though it may not be a fan favourite, this Pokemon truly embodies the essence of a frog.
Politoed made its debut in the second generation as a different evolution option for Poliwhirl. It’s worth noting that it has superior stats compared to Poliwrath, a Pokémon that is often overlooked.
Furthermore, Politoed is more susceptible to fewer types when compared to Poliwrath, highlighting the importance of keeping organs protected internally.
It’s always better to err on the side of caution.
