Call of Duty Zombies players thought that the upcoming release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 for older consoles would result in the return of the infamous “Last-Gen Richtofen.”
Call of Duty Zombies has become one of the most popular features of the series across multiple entries and multiple console generations since it was included in Call of Duty: World at War.
One famous graphical glitch may return in the next big game in the series. However, its long history has also led to a long list of funny and, at times, scary bugs.
For background, Edward Richtofen is a major character who appears repeatedly in the Call of Duty Zombies storyline and who typically takes on the role of an antagonist.
Even in the newest game, Richtofen is still one of the most important characters in the mode’s story.
He usually shows up in short scenes or full-length cutscenes. This included Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s Zombies mode, which was known for having terrible graphics on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
The community then made fun of Richtofen’s bad last-gen model and animations, which led to the creation of the “Last-Gen Richtofen” meme.
After rumours spread that Black Ops 6 would be coming out on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One based on pre-order information from GameStop, many fans worried that this could be a repeat of the past and questioned the developers’ choice to bring the newest Call of Duty to today’s old consoles.
People pointed out the “Shadows of Evil” map for Black Ops 3 as an example of how the differences between console generations hurt the overall experience for players from earlier generations and led to the rise of Last-Gen Richtofen.
Fans Skeptical of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Last-Gen Release
Other fans questioned why they should upgrade their platforms if developers were content to limit the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S’ graphics to what was possible on last-generation consoles.
Commenters were also not sure if the game would work well on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. They thought this might make the experience even worse, like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Black Ops 3.
Although fans are naturally worried that the rumoured last-gen versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and its Call of Duty Zombies mode won’t live up to the hype, nothing is set in stone and things can still change.
Having said that, players can take heart in the fact that the most recent live-action trailer for Black Ops 6 said that developers would reveal more information at the Xbox Games Showcase, which is scheduled for June 9.
